Civil Rights

Commentary By;
Freedom "Fred" Perkins Sr.

What ever happened to my civil rights? I want you to understand before going any further that I have no problem with others having their civil rights, but I want mine also. I think that it is time for a level playing field. I don't think that affirmative action does anything but is divisive for the federal government. When the government can dictate they have control over you and every one else. People become less intone with one another when affirmative action raises its ugly head. I think that an example would make my point a little better than I might. There are a number of colleges that had a dual entry program. They made it more difficult for a white student to enter their college and less for people of color. I have no thoughts about only white students going to college but I would like it sat up where it is equal. I have heard it said that you have to consider the poor black or poor Latino, I would like to point out that there are more poor white than blacks and Latinos put together. The United Negro College Fund, used to say," a mind is a terrible thing to waist", I concur. Let me relate a story to you. A few years ago there was a young man that graduated form high school, he was in the top 10 of his class and had a 3.92 grade point average. Prior to graduating he had taken the SAT and scored 1120. He was a member of the Math team and the Science team as well. His family was of modest means and would never have been able to send him to college and a scholarship would help a lot. This studious young man should have had a lot of scholarships coming his way but none came, however at Christmas break a call had come form a unexpected University, it was the Dean of admissions he had informed the family that even though the young man hadn't applied there that they thought that they could maybe give this young man a scholarship if he would take the ACT, he took it and scored 28.5 the university gave him the President's Scholarship but this was the only scholarship that he received. There were a number of minorities that received scholarships went to collage and then dropped out. I know this story is true as it was my 's story, can you imagine what a mind to waist. Before I go on to another part of this column I would like to point out that if every person of color applied was more qualified to attend the college than any white student then they should be admitted and not the white student. As a white man if I go to the small business administration for assistance I most likely won't get any but if I was a woman or a person of color I would. These practices have to come to an end. By act of congress the white man has become the most discriminated against person in the United States. No man or woman in this day and age should be treated as a second class citizen. The most qualified for any job should have it, red, yellow, black ,white, male or female. A person's color or gender shouldn't have anything to do with anything.
The advent of 9/11 has made things go crazy in this country, there is is a new Administration called Homeland Security. This has pre-empted everyones rights. perhaps more than you might realize. If you travel for a living you might think that you are in the former USSR. Many men died for the rights that were just taken away by our Federal Government, I don't see an end to the government peeping into yours and my private lives. Do you really think that an old woman over 90 years old should be stopped and frisked by a agent of the airlines before she can get on an airplane. As I see it I would rather have a 9/11 then to loose my rights I really don't want this to ever happen again, but I want you to think about it,...........Think about it,.........The terrorists won they cost us each our individual rights. I also know if you can read this column, I know that you know already that you will never get those rights back, they are now gone forever. Just where have my civil rights gone.

...and OH...the affirmative action thing? pfffftttt...you hit the nail on the head...it may have started out with the right thing in mind but where it's gone is a complete different direction from where it was intended...or is it?

It was my intention to point out that the government has become not a government by the people but by the special interest, and that the government has interferred in our everyday lives.

I agree with all but the ending. Your sons situation happens a lot. It is sad. The most discriminated against? The middle class citizen, regardless of color.

We are not going to get our civil rights back. Forget that. Be thankful you have made it this far. Our government is in sad shape and it has nothing to do with any president. It got out of control and is way to big to stop

Hi Freedom: In Canada, a lot of government job postings state clearly "white males need not apply". I think all job interviews should be like double blind research studies, the interviewer shouldn't even know who they are interviewing. Then its possible that the most qualified person will get the job, regardless of their race, age, sex. Moot point anyway, no-one's hiring.

As far as the government cutting costs....they better start looking at how much all the thousands of politicians are getting paid. In Canada, our Senators for example make about $134,000 for 71 days of work a year. That works out to over $2,500. a week for 1.5 days work. That is all coming out of taxpayers money, but do we have any say over how many Senators we need or how much they should get paid?? NO.

As far as the border crossing guards....they should put every single one of their Gestapo interrogations on tape as far as I'm concerned. The guards here at the Niagara Falls border are so rude and arrogant it is unbelievable. There is no need to treat decent Canadian and U.S. citizens the way they do. I sure don't think I look or act like a terrorist, yet I have had so many lengthy embarrassing interrogations by those guys, and so have many decent people I know who live in this area. They once removed all the seats from my 80+ year old parents car, then they told my parents to re-install the seats themselves and get lost.

It is pretty bad when a woman my mothers age (83) is strip searched by a female looking like Rambo, before she can get on an airplane

I wont travel by plane any more. They had my daughter in floods of tears at airport and she wont go anywhere (she was in US) any more. It is an interrogation. I dont think any of us have any rights. I live in Ireland but its no better than anywhere else. Give someone a bit of power and they go to hell.
