...? What do you like most about the South?...

Recently I had occasion to think about what I missed most about the South...I grew up my first 26 years in Arkansas, except for occasional forays elsewhere for work temporarily in Texas and California...

Southerners there used to jokingly (a little tongue-in-cheek here) say that there were only 5 states in the "True South"...Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama...and that Texas was East Hollywood, and Florida was lower New York state...(this was a joke, remember)...

I miss thunder, lightning storms (we used to sit out on the porch and call them "free 4th of July fireworks")...warm lakes, creeks, and rivers (here in the NW most lakes and rivers are snow fed and quite chilly)...Turtle doves moaning...all kinds of songbirds...June bugs (as a we would tie thread to their legs and watch them fly in circles)...lightning bugs at night (we used to catch them and put them in a mason jar and take them into our bedrooms in the dark)...

...?What do you enjoy most?...

Having never lived in the south but having grown up in the Midwest many of the things you mention I recall as well. I love Midwest Thunder/Lightening storms. I miss that when a rain storm comes in the summer that when it is over it goes right back to being sunny and warm, here in the Northwest if we get a summer rain storm we can pretty much expect it to be cold also for a couple of days. But for sure that day is done. I miss warm nights where you do not need to take a jacket when you go out, versus here where it is 80 knowing it will be 60 before the evening is over. I do not miss the Humidity however! And Val we do have great summers here in the PNW at least inland we do!

I heard that Florida moved up North because they got tired of all those darn hurricanes.

Hi val !! Just as Lady had stated I am not from the south either, and I do agree we have still experienced alot of the same. Living mainly in N.Y. and NW Pa, every summer I still collect lightening bugs with the kids !! It's a summer ritual. When the occasional june bug does appear ( I RUN ). The summer of the katydids return I spent in the house hiding...lol. Here in Pa. we have it all.Local parks have the outdoor movies still, the thunderstorms are wicked and powerful, and beautiful! The mts. , hills and winding roads are specail.Zambelli fireworks are home based here, so we have the very best in every town, Pittsburghs light show over the three rivers is amazing! People here really are into their back yards so it is not unusual to see the different species of birds that gather here for the summer, and just about everyone who can has that fire ring in their backyard !! Most of all although people like to say we northerners are rude, we are true.We let you know where we are from the jump, don't play games, and "ARE FRIENDLY", despite what others think !! I lived in Missouri for a short time, and vow I will never go back.I love real people and that you can only find in the northern states.I've met many people from the south and I do beleive they have nothing up on us. We northerners seem to be less judgemental, and more accepting of people. I am not trying to put southerners down by any means, this is just from my own personal experiences that I have had with southerners I have met along my way.I do beleive we have good people in all areas no matter where we are from.Maybe I just love the north, but would never ever give up the four seasons we have here.Summers are ones of enjoyment and looked forward to upon its arrival, fall we watch it all die, but the cool breeze it brings and the beauty is astounding.Winter, we anticipate the freeze and the cleansing, but yes we do cry about it...lol...Then Spring is here!!....we watch the birth of newness, once again to do it all over again. That is the beauty of it all.Ever changing, over and over again. The changing of seasons and our love for it, is what makes us true northerners !! (life itself is just the changing of seasons.....on our path to knowledge and enlightenment)

Hi Val, I have never been there but might travel over yet. All I know is its a wonderful place. My daughter who is in Little Rock has been sending me some great pictures of the snow, the tornadoes, rain, lightning, I even heard the rumble of the thunder. This is the sort of weather she loves, and so do I. Her friends family are dying to meet me, so maybe I will experience it soon.

I am a recent transplant to Georgia, having lived my whole life "up north" and in California for 22 years.

I love the hospitality, the food, the flowering trees (never saw so many dogwoods), so many flowers, learning to like grits. It is beautiful here! Lots of history too. Miss Ann as they call me here

Val,
I truely love the south, Although Texas was on consider a southern state we still have the southern ways. It is a place that we call home. I agree with shay we do have some of the best cooking that anyone can find. Also we have our own lango - ya'll come, or over yonder, push a button, howdy, coke is a soft drink no matter what brand, poke is a paper sack and etc.

Yes we have lighting bugs and I did put them in a mason jar and if you don't know what a mason jar - is was something that we can (put food in for the winter)
