Swan Lake ; Mam, Dad and the

After a very long and tough day, stripping wallpaper and tile cement from the bathroom walls, we got to the park at eight with the intention of getting a few good pictures quickly and not hanging around too long.

As it happened, if we'd had directorial control over the swans they could hardly have been more co-operative.

When we got there the mammy was dunking for worms, or whatever it is they dunk for, in the middle of the pond and the four cygnets were keeping very close to her with the daddy guy quite near at hand. There are still two unhatched eggs in the nest.

We'd only been there a few minutes and had taken some beautiful pics of all six out in the lake, when, exacttly as we would have hoped, the matriach led her little ones back to the nest and terra firma.

Upon reaching the nest, the mother swan remained afoot and spent several minutes grooming herself, as if not to be outdone, or perhaps because they're quick learners, the little ones began preening themselves too. They were still at it when we left to go to the off licence for a few beers at 8:20.

We have so many lovely pics, it's a shame that we can only post one to accompany this blog.

We have very limited monthly space left at flickr so we can only afford to post two new pics there from tonight's batch.

Passwords/username for flickr : BillyBaker2007 and Maudie1950. Either one will have a link to the other.

Some of these must be perfect for framing. I love looking at the family!

Hi Maudie, Anns suggestion is good, I think I would frame that one too. jimbob said that they leave the unhatched eggs, is that the case. Abandoning their unborn. I hope not. Beautiful story Maudie. You worked hard and deserved your few beers at the end of the day.

the majesty of the swan never wanes, just sitting close by them gives a feeling of calm serenity

our local swans are all juvenile males outcast for a year or two before they mature and settle for life with a mate - check out
fyldebirdclub and also Fleetwood boating lake swans these show the varied bird life around these parts especially the sea birds for whom th receding tide opens a supermarket style larder of food on every sand bank

Mimi & Lady, if you go to flickr and use either of the usernames listed above in the blog itself you'll get access to one and a link from that to the other. There are about 80 swan pics there but we are restricted to posting about eight more until the beginning of next month.
