Lol...... are you sure you are asking for "a friend"?
Now, to your question..... it would seem obvious that since this was not what she intended, they she shouldn't be held to the apparent calories.

My friend and I once binge-watched the PBS documentary series "The Power of Myrh" with Joseph Campbell and Bill Moyers" There are 6 one hour long segments.......I had them on DVD........We wanted to watch it with someone we could discuss it with afterwards.....My friend offered to make us dinner and watch it at her place. Sounded good to me...... She made mashed potatoes.......very good mashed potatoes, but only mashed potatoes.......I couldn't believe it.....I would never serve only mashed potatoes......in fact, I wouldn't serve myself only mashed potatoes..............

But it makes sense, really, because there are so many calories and it is so rich and filling and the taste is always overpowered by the meat and veggies and gravy etc...........Bill Moyers with a side of spuds........

So to answer your question........Potatoes on their own, with butter and milk and in our case, roasted garlic, have only the required number of calories.....

I'm back...... I just read something that may help solve the dilemma. I read that if you eat a whole cake without cutting it into slices, it is the same as having one serving.
So if "your friend" eats those mashed taters straight out of the bowl, it is the same as one serving and that's all the calories they would have.
Made sense to me!

On 2 different occasions I ate a whole box of sweetened cereal, while watching TV. Straight out of the box. No milk, no sugar and plumb yummy

I thought...oops!

when I came back to this blog, I remembered another mashed potato themed incident. I was taking a series of creative writing workshops. The instructor had these really great ways to inspire us and get us writing.....based on Natalie Goldberg's "Writing Down the Bones". You write for 10 minutes. You have to keep writing, even if you are just repeating the same word. Then you read it aloud....It was so much fun....Anyways, one assignment was to write about mashed potatoes. ....ten minutes later, I heard the most fascinating and funny stories.....I don't remember mine, but there was one by an Italian woman that I remember. Well, I remember how it started.

It was an extended family function, she was in the kitchen crowded with large-bottomed women milling about....she was so small that her head reached only as high as the bobbing bums....I don't remember where the mashed potatoes came in, but she described it so vividly from a child's point of view....
