shopping is not a spectator sport

there is a second hand store in el paso that i love to frequent. it's located in the poorer section of el paso, past the chevron refineries and near the rio grande....but worth the drive.

this is no church-run charity; the company operates stores in austin, san antonio and, even, boston. what i love is that most of the merchandise here originated in new england...clothes i love but that aren't especially popular on the border. and stuff i grew up with like pyrex bowls and bean pots. one can never have too many bean pots.

when it's busy, the place is a zoo. very few people speak english. the music blasting from the stereo systems along the wall is in spanish. it can be shoulder to shoulder shoppers, especially on the week-end. i usually avoid the busiest days. think of christmas shopping the day before christmas and you have an idea of how frantic it can be. it's a popular place with mexican nationals, too. on week-ends, there are as many chihuahua licence plates as texas on the cars in the parking lot.

i went yesterday in search of pants to wear in alaska. i hadn't been there in months (i'd been in vermont since last june) but it was as i remembered. i had a blast. i found a pair of designer corduroys for 3.50....yup. beautiful moss green corduroy jeans in my size. i had a conversation (my broken spanish/her broken english) with another shopper about a poor grumpy in line with his stressed out mom. and i bought a set of dishes. 4 dinner plates, 4 bowls, 3 bread and butter plates. i didn't have my glasses with me but they looked like blue willow china and they cost $7 so i bought them. i figured my , meg, could use them.

i got home and discovered that the pants were incredibly comfortable. and i discovered that the dishes (never been used--mint condition) were churchill china from england. no, the pattern was not blue willow. i looked it up online. it was 'blue tonquin.' which churchill has discontinued but i did find a supplier and i can buy a replacement plate for 6.95....so the set will be complete.

hey, it looks great with my bean pots!

Seems like a wonderful place to shop. You got some very good bargains too. The Churchill china sounds lovely.
