The 3 Seasons

Winter

sentries in white coats
with frost covered bare branches
motionless in rows

I have seen rows of frost covered trees just once in Canada. It was so peaceful and serene that the memory of it lingers on.

Spring

buds and new shoots sprout
specks of green peek out
creeping warmth with rainy bouts

Spring is the time when life rejuvenates!
I have seen spring both in Canada and China. The sights of brown patches of land turning green day by day, buds emerging on bare branches, shoots slowly sprouting and trees completely covered with brightly coloured flowers in the fine misty rain remain forever etched on my memory.

Summer

In my country, it is summer all year round so summer does not intrigue me enough to inspire me.

Autumn

clinging stubbornly
all alone and desolate
the last leaf of fall

Every autumn, there is always the last leaf to fall. It announces the onset of winter.
This reminds me of a Chinese movie that I have watched a long time ago. It was the love story of a poor young taxi driver whose childhood love was to be married to a rich old man when he returns to the village from America in the winter.
The young man watched anxiously as summer turned into autumn and the leaves of the big tree in the courtyard began falling. Then one morning, from his window, he could see that there was only leaf left at the top of the tree ‒ the last leaf of fall.
In a desperate attempt to prevent the onset of winter, the young man climbed up the tree with the intention of tying the leaf with a string but just as he was about to do that, the leaf broke off and slowly fluttered to the ground........

Hi RC,
Thank you for rounding it off with the beautiful poem on Summer. Maynilabelle should now be happy.

Wow, Lee is turning into a poet again
In a way I miss the seasons living in Malaysia........ but it is quite nice to know that everyday will be the same...... well, depending on the amount of rain .

Hi flakes,
Didn't you watch that movie? It had Sumo Hung as the male lead. Can you imagine Sumo without his kung fu and playing a lover boy? Actually he gave a very good performance. The female lead was Sylvia Chang Ai Chia, one of my favourites.
I have often been told that autumn is very beautiful. In Japan, they trek up the mountain in autumn just to admire the beautiful forests.

Hi MsEducator,
Thank you. Yes, life can sometimes be so sad and poignant. The young man refused to declare his love even though the girl was waiting for him to do so because he felt that she would have a better life with the rich man.

Hi Maynilabelle,
Actually I left summer to be written by summer because I felt that she would be the one who can describe it best but she has disappeared, together with her Love Notes Diary. Anyway, remotecontrol has posted a beautiful poem on summer above.
I too love the green but the heat and the humidity! Luckily I am living in the wettest town in Malaysia.

Hi whiterose,
Yes, the wet season is upon us again but I love it. Winter is too cold but I like spring; I just cannot forget the sight of those beautiful flowering trees by the side of the lake in the misty rain (unlike the downpours that we have here).

Hi summer,
Ha,ha. That's the only way to get you to visit. You know what, the phrase that I like best is "once you grow older" but I ALREADY LIKE SUMMER.
Yes, haiku is very challenging.
We are supposed to create an image in the reader's mind but when we make it simple, some says that it is superficial and that we should have "layers of meaning" but some are so ambiguous that I cannot even get one meaning/image.
If I try to put in "layers of meaning" then even I would not be able to understand what I have written but at least there are fans like you who likes them. I think that's the best policy; don't try to understand them, just like them.

Hi summer,
And I thought you came back to visit me!
Why don't you just invite Oldboy to AP since he, too, likes poetry? Then you can show off all your trophies and teach him about haiku, children's poetry and limericks. You write good haiku especially the funny ones.
Pen Tan? Ask your Mandarin teacher.
