Is this love?

love birds by ferix_bucket

Yesterday as I was riding home on my white motorbike among moderately heavy traffic, I suddenly came upon a dead bird on the road. Another bird was risking its life darting in and out of the traffic to try to get to the dead bird and, above the din of the busy road, I could almost hear it pleading and cajoling the dead bird to get up again. Is this love?

Maybe its not love at all. Maybe the other bird killed it and was checking to make sure it was really dead. Nice to think it was love though, eh?

We had a female cardinal crash into our kitchen window and died. Apparently there was a nest nearby. A male came and sounded like it was looking for its mate. It made the saddest noise, almost a cry. It broke my heart listening to it looking for its mate. Sounded like love to me.....

Hi mrsjoe,

I agree that there are many who do not know what love is so perhaps we can say that these birds care? I have also seen a mynah bird attack a full grown cat which has its mouth around the throat of another mynah bird in an attempt to free the caught bird.

Hi Abelle,

Your anecdote reminds me of a bizarre incident that I witnessed about 10 years ago. One day, some trees along the road in a hospital were full of crows that were wailing loudly and when I checked, I saw a dead crow on the road; a recent roadkill. Whenever it was safe to do so, a couple of crows would fly down to the road near the dead bird and crying out loudly. No one dared to remove the carcass that morning for fear of being attacked.
