Lost All My Hospital Privileges

I was just remembering.

It was May, 1970. I was flown to the 95th Evacuation Hospital in DaNang, RVN. Got patched up there for a week or so, then flown to the Naval hospital on the island of Okinawa.

I met my room mate..a young fellow who lost a leg to a land mine. No TV in hospitals in those days so we had a lot of time to talk. We were both tied down with IV's and such but the hospital staff was wonderful to us..They had Navy nurses, civilian nurses and native workers for housekeeping and such. We were treated like VIP's. A little groan and someone was right there with the morphine..Wanted an ice cream or a coke all we had to do was ask.

Well....my room mate and I got to talking about how good a drink of whiskey would be. The more we talked the worse we wanted a drink. We started badgering a Navy Corpsman who was taking care of us to go to the NCO club and buy us a bottle. He resisted mightily, but finally gave in and smuggled us in a jug.

Between the morphine and the booze my memory of that night is pretty foggy, but when we woke the next morning the place was buzzing and we knew we were in deep doodoo. I guess someone was offended by our bawdy songs and loud laughing.

A nice little Okinawan housekeeper took the empty bottle from us and smuggled it out in a stack of dirty sheets. It wasn't fifteen minutes later that a Navy big shot came storming in with four or five yes-men trailing behind him. Of course we denied everything.

The yes-men searched everywhere for the bottle..They looked in our night stand, in our bedding and even under the mattresses..No evidence anywhere.

Finally the Navy officer swelled up and said:

"I want you two to know that I'm entering this episode in your medical records and I'm suspending all your hospital privileges."

My room mate, lying there with one leg and tubes and wires everywhere just looked up innocently:

"Uh...excuse me there Admiral..I'm curious. Just what privileges is it that you're taking away?"

That afternoon they loaded me and my room mate on another airplane and flew us to the Air Force hospital in Japan. Guess we didn't meet the Navy's standards of conduct LOL.

Just another day in the life of a soldier.

Don,
First thank you for serving. I only gave them 9 years 9 months and 27 days (Navy). Next, thank you for this blog.

In 1997 I went to the hospital to visit a co-worker who put in 30 years (Navy). He was dying with cancer at the age of 57. I was told by other co-workers that day at work he would not last through the night. I brought along with me his favorite brand, Jack Daniels. Yes, we told some sea stories. I don't remember much other than the nurses coming to the door and smiling but I did wake up the next morning in my co-workers room, on a roll away as they were rolling my friend out to the morgue.

Thank you sir for the memories!

.
The beginning of life, conception..

Reminds me of something out of a M*A*S*H episode.

I would have told the bigwig, "Hey, can you speak up a little bit? Someone just tried to kill me and my ears are still ringing."
