Oh Canada

After some real soul searching on the subject of blogging, I have decided to direct my blogs toward my fellow Canadians here at SFF.
Other countries will of course be mentioned but only as they relate to the Canadian experience. We Canadians are some of the most popular people in the world and it would of course be nice to see us remain so.
I was listening to a business commentator on Fox News (who is married to a Canadian) say that he puts Canadian decals on his luggage so people will treat him better.
A blog by Love1951 directed at our present Conservative government really touched my heart. Our country is in danger of being sucked into the neocon and religious right agenda occurring elsewhere in the English speaking world. An agenda that could see many of our citizens deprived of their rights as Canadians.
She called out for Canadians to stand up and fight our present prime minister. So here I am.

Yours Tag

Canada is colorful in so many ways. No one who travels in the Eastern Provinces can fail to notice the colorful houses. It is not unusual to see a yellow and orange house with a blue roof, or a house whose front is painted green and white and whose sides are painted bright red. The abundant wild berries in the eastern provinces are not only colorful but flavorful. The Canadian scenery is most colorful, the towering mountains and the wonderful rocky seacoast in the west, the sunsets on the prairie, the lakes and hills as one journeys toward the east, the hilly eastern seacoast and the blue, blue sea. Colorful also is the abundant and varied wild life of Canada, for there are still vast stretches of wilderness where wild things can hide. And speaking of colorful, as I look acrossed the prairie the most perfect double rainbow I have ever seen arched my way. It was so close its colors were reflected on nearby trees - it was so breathtakingly beautiful it was unforgettable.

The Conservative party with Stephen Harper are causing Canadians to become increasingly concerned.
I'm a strong believer in individual rights, and have a 'live & let live' kind of attitude.
Unfortunately, I don't have a great deal of confidence in the other parties either!!
Take Care !!

I'm proud to be a Canadian - I'm proud that I have an independent voice and that I use it when necessary. I don't approve of everything our government does and when I disapprove I say so. We are a nation of diverse nationalities and religions not to mention lifestyles and I, for one, support them all - how very Liberal of me!!

I can't and won't stand up for this particular Prime Minister - he says one thing and does another, but in all honesty I don't see anyone on the political horizon that will do any better. Somewhere out there is a young man or woman with fresh ideas and strong principles and a willingness to serve for the best interests of all Canadians...and when he or she comes along they will have my support wholeheartedly.

In the meantime, since Rick Mercer prefers entertainment to politics I guess I'll just have to live with chronic political disappointment.

Hi Tag: People across 27 countries were polled for the recent BBC World Service poll. The poll was to rate 12 countries on their "positive or negative influence on the world". The countries rated in the poll were Britain, Canada, China, France, India, Iran, Israel, Japan, North Korea, Russia, the USA, Venezuela ‒ and the European Union.

Canada was rated #1, as "the country with the most positive influence on the world", so we must be doing something right. I will not mention the order in which the other countries were rated in case I offend someone from another country but the results are available on the internet.

mrelusive - If you guys stopped intruding in other countries with unpleasant consequences for the inhabitants, we might stop intruding in US politics.

I like it when outsiders comment on Canadian affairs if they know what they are talking about. Trouble is, that being a middle power, few outside of Canada know enough about us and our problems to discuss them intelligently.

Hello Tag,

How interesting! I do enjoy reading political views expressed from many countries, my own being no exception. Thus, I was attracted to the subject of your blog. However, my views do differ from yours. (I have not had the privilege of reading Love1951's thoughts yet).

I find our Prime Minister, Mr. Harper, a competent communicator who appears to be politically responsive to Canadians' concerns. He is smart. I appreciate the fact that when he speaks he is straightforward, and businesslike. I would be willing to give him my vote in the next federal election. (One term a great leader does not make!)

He has youth on his side, and so far, has not allowed scandal to riddle his government as the past Prime Minister did. Unfortunately, the fact that he is a principled man may be distasteful to many members of today's society!! Yes, he has made some mistakes. However, from where I sit, his government has created a generally favourable impression with policies that are appreciated by the 'ordinarly' person in the street.

In my opinion, Mr. Harper will probably have difficulty winning another election. He lacks charisma. It always amazes me that while a leader may prove himself to be intelligent, as well as competent, he will win no brownie points if he does not appear 'cuddly'. Another big stroke against Mr. Harper? He is a westerner!!

Our Prime Minister's 'likability' will probably make or break his future in Canadian politics. I will remain on the side of youth...and wish him all of the best.

BC

beecee - Harper is politically responsive to Canadians' concerns? Coulda fooled me. Breaking his promise on income trusts, ramping up Canada's combat role in Afghanistan when the public is mostly opposed, passing that silly resolution on Quebec, to name a few.

No scandals? How about the one when he appointed a floor-crossing Liberal from Vancouver to his first cabinet?

tagalderi replies on 3/9/2007 3:48 pm:
Harper has a minority government, I am not sure I want him to have a majority.
