A strong heart.

Bible in one year:
Deuteronomy 28–29

Mark 14:54–72
My flesh and heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my share forever.

Psalm 73:26

Today's Scriptures & Insight:

Psalm 73:21–28
In his book Fearfully and Wonderfully Made, co-author with Philip Yancey, Dr. Paul Brand observed: "A hummingbird heart weighs a fraction of an ounce and beats eight hundred times per minute; the heart of a blue whale weighs half a ton, beats only ten times per minute, and can be heard two miles away. Unlike either, the human heart seems dull functional, however, it does its job, beating 100,000 times a day [65-70 times per minute] with no free time for rest, to get most of us through seventy years or more."

The incredible heart drives us so deformed through life that it has become a metaphor for our overall inner well-being. However, both our literal and metaphorical hearts are prone to failure. What can we do?

Psalm 73, a Psalm 73, a worship leader from Israel, acknowledged that the true strength comes from somewhere else—Someone. He wrote, "My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my share forever" (v. 26). Asaph was right. The living God is our ultimate and eternal strength. As the Creator of heaven and earth, He knows no such limitations to His perfect power.

In our times of difficulty and defiance, let us discover what Asaph learned through his own struggles: God is the true strength of our hearts. We can rest with that strength every day.

Reflect & Pray
What is your metaphorical heart like as your spiritual heart? When you feel like you're "losing your heart," how can you find strength in your loving and loving Father?

Heavenly Father, I thank you that when I'm weak, you're strong. That when I'm overwhelmed, you're enough. That when I'm confused, you have perfect clarity.

Yes, and amen. When Joe's cardiologist told us that they were all amazed how although his heart valves are bad and he is in CHF, he is doing pretty good. He said they were all surprised that he is still alive. I told him that I lay hands on him and pray for him. He said that whatever we are doing, keep it up. That was over 3 years ago.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.
