Relentless Love

Bible in a Year:
Ezekiel 47–48

1 John 3
Let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

1 John 3:18

Today's Scripture & Insight:

1 John 3:–18
Heidi and Jeff came home from an overseas work assignment in a hot climate and settled for several months near family in the state of Michigan—just in time for winter. This would be the first time many of their ten had seen the natural beauty of snow.

But winter weather in Michigan requires a lot of warm outerwear, including coats, mittens, and boots. For a large family, it would be quite an expensive undertaking just outfit them for the bitterly cold months ahead. But God provided. First, a neighbor brought over footwear, then snow pants, then hats and gloves. Then, a friend urged others at her church collect a variety of warm clothes in twelve sizes for each member of the family. By the time the snow arrived, the family had exactly what they needed.

One of the ways we serve God is by serving those in need. First John 3:–18 encourages us help others from the abundance of our own possessions. Serving helps us be more like Jesus as we begin love and see people as He does.

God often uses His fulfill needs and answer prayers. And as we serve others, our own hearts are encouraged as we encourage those we serve. As a result, our own faith will grow as God equips us for service in new ways (v. 18.

Reflect & Pray
As you notice the numerous needs of people around you, how can you show God’s love in a practical way? How does serving God help your faith grow?

Father, fill my heart with the willingness help when I see a need. Help give joyfully and serve You with gratitude.

Love should be more an action word than a noun. At this time of year, when everyone seems so involved in the hustle and bustle of decorating, planning, and buying, I hope people look around and see those who are less fortunate.
There are Angel Trees in stores, food pantries in all areas, and of course, just give straight to a family in need. This can all be anonymously if a person wants, but to some families, who must chose between children getting Christmas presents or food on their table, it can mean more than a person could ever know.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

I agree, love is a verb, not just a hollow sentiment and Christmas an example of how giving begets its own reward/s.  Our local community organisation ran its annual Christmas parade yesterday evening - attendance was down but nonetheless, still a good turn out and enthusiasm undiminished.  The children's laughter and song on their gaily decked out floats, happy honking of local fire brigade/emergency services horns and slow rumble of huge tractors (small farming community) as they slowly made their way along the main street brings the community together. As a member of the non profit/self funding organisation, with assisting the local community in practical ways its primary focus, is/can be satisfying and I applaud its goals.
