Failed Again

Bible in a Year:
Psalms 8–0

1 Corinthians :29–58
After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying finish by means of the flesh?

Galatians 3:3

Galatians 3:1–6
Back in my sermon-making days I approached some Sunday mornings feeling like a lowly worm. During the week before, I had not been the best husband, father, or friend. I felt that before God could use me again I had establish a track record of right living. So I vowed get through the sermon as best I could and try live better the coming week.

That was not the right approach. In Galatians 3 it’s said that God continually supplies us with His Spirit and works powerfully through us as a free gift—not because we’ve done anything or deserve it.

Abraham’s life demonstrates this. At times he failed as a husband. For example, he twice put Sarah’s life in jeopardy by lying save his own skin (Genesis :10–20; 20:1–18. Yet his faith “was credited him as righteousness” (Galatians 3:6). Abraham put himself in God’s hands despite his failures, and God used him bring salvation the world through his lineage.

There’s no justification for behaving badly. Jesus has asked us follow Him in obedience, and He supplies the means do so. A hard, unrepentant heart will always hinder His purposes for us, but His ability use us doesn’t depend a lengthy pattern of good behavior. It’s based solely God’s willingness work through us as we are: saved and growing by grace. You don’t have work for His grace—it’s free.

Reflect & Pray
Think of those situations in which you’ve felt disqualified. How does God look at those occasions? How do you?

I’m thankful, God, that You bless and use in spite of my failures. Your grace is amazing!

Again, a truth that I so easily and often forget. Thank God for His grace.
Joe is doing ok, and has decided against surgery to repair the fracture to his upper arm. The surgeon said it will heal on its own, just maybe not as good as with the surgery, but with Joe's other health issues the anesthesia would have been quite risky. Joe chose to forgo the surgery and trust God, as we do daily, for every day we have each other is a gift from Him.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

I'm glad things have turned out for the best re the decision to forgo surgery for the reasons you outlined; that Joe's fracture will heal of its own accord. I've never had a fractured bone so have no idea/appreciation of the pain. I hope he doesn't experience too much discomfort.
