Living on Purpose

Bible in a Year:
Psalms 84–86

Romans
Whatever you do, do it for the glory of God.

1 Corinthians 10:31

Romans :9–21
“We’re going vacation!” my wife enthusiastically told our -year-old grandson Austin as we pulled out of the driveway on the first leg of our trip. Little Austin looked at her thoughtfully and responded, “I’m not going on vacation. I’m going on a mission!”

We’re not sure where our grandson picked the concept of going “on a mission,” but his comment gave me something ponder as we drove the airport: As I leave this vacation and take a break for a few days, am I keeping in mind that I’m still “on a mission” live each moment with and for God? Am I remembering serve Him in everything I do?

The apostle Paul encouraged the believers living in Rome, the capital city of the Roman Empire, “never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord” (Romans :11). His point was that our life in Jesus is meant be lived intentionally and with enthusiasm. Even the most mundane moments gain new meaning as we look expectantly God and live for His purposes.

As we settled into our seats the plane, I prayed, “Lord, I’m yours. Whatever you have for do this trip, please help not miss it.”

Every day is a mission of eternal significance with Him!

Reflect & Pray
Have you ever been on a mission? How can you make life about God?

Please give grace live for You, Jesus, so that I may one day hear You say, “Well done, good and faithful servant!” (Matthew 25:23).

Something we should all remember, but I know I often forget it.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

We are but mere mortals, it is easy to forget. Our strength is in Him. Consistency is the key, the courage to continue in spite of the many obstacles life strews in our path.  Your steadfastness I respect.  Hopefully my words make sense/are appropriate even if short sighted.  Have you read 'Markings' by former NU Secretary-General, Dag Hammarskjold (Sweden)?  The journal was published after his death in accordance with his wishes (died in plane crash 1961).  His cover letter is telling - 'a sort of White Book concerning my negotiations with myself - and with God' (courtesy wiki).  I hope you don't mind the inclusion of a 'Markings' review set out below.  [My closest childhood friend had a great collection/selection of books in her mini library introduced me to 'Markings' when we were in our late teens/early 20's.]

'Universally known and admired as a peacemaker, Dag Hammarskjöld concealed a remarkably intense inner life which he recorded over several decades in this journal of poems and spiritual meditations, left to be published after his death. A dramatic account of spiritual struggle, Markings has inspired hundreds of thousands of readers since it was first published in 1964.

Markings is distinctive, as W.H. Auden remarks in his foreword, as a record of "the attempt by a professional man of action to unite in one life the via activa and the via contemplativa." It reflects its author's efforts to live his creed, his belief that all men are equally the children of God and that faith and love require of him a life of selfless service to others. For Hammarskjöld, "the road to holiness necessarily passes through the world of action." Markings is not only a fascinating glimpse of the mind of a great man, but also a moving spiritual classic that has left its mark on generations of readers.'

It's hard to imagine that great men like the UN Secretary would have such inner spiritual and emotional battles as we "mere" humans, but I guess we all bear the burden of being human.
Thank God, He loves us, in spite of our human shortcomings, and just as we are creation of His hands, He has also made us to be adopted as His children throught the blood of His son, Jesus. The older I get, the more I appreciate that love.
