Tight Circles

Bible in a Year :

Psalms 2–4; 1 Corinthians :–34
It is for freedom Christ has set us free.

Galatians 5:1

Galatians 5:1, 4–
A classmate gave my family a registered collie had become too old to breed puppies. We soon learned this beautiful had, sadly, spent much of her life inside a small pen. She would only walk in tight circles. She couldn’t fetch or run in a straight line. And even with a large yard in which to , she thought she was fenced in.

The first Christians, many who were Jews, were used to being fenced in the Mosaic law. Though the law was good and had been given God to convict them of sin and lead them to Jesus (Galatians 3:–25), it was time to live out their new faith based in God’s grace and the freedom of Christ. They hesitated. After all this time, were they really free?

We may have the same problem. Perhaps we grew up in churches with rigid rules fenced us in. Or we were raised in permissive homes and are now desperate for the security of rules. Either way, it’s time to embrace our freedom in Christ (Galatians 5:1). Jesus has freed us to obey Him out of love (John :21) and to “serve one another humbly in love” (Galatians 5. An entire field of joy and love is open for those who realize “if the sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36).

Reflect & Pray
How have you been kept from experiencing freedom in Christ? How can realizing this freedom you serve others?

Jesus, to believe I am as free as You say.

Two thoughts..... too many people, usually nonbelievers, think this freedom means Christians can do anything bad they want to do and just ask forgiveness. Those nonbelievers often ridicule Christians because that's what they think we believe.
The second thought was a memory triggered by the comment about a desire for rules. One day, my teenage son was out running around with friends in another friend's car. He was to be home at a certain time, and he was. He came into the house and said, "Mom, say 'no'." I questioned him but he again asked me to just say 'no'. So I said, "No."
He went to the door and yelled at his friends waiting in the car, "Mom said 'no', so I'll see you later. They left. Then I again asked for an explanation. They had wanted to keep running around and wanted him to go with them, and he didn't want to, but didn't want to hurt their feelings, so he asked me to set the perimeter for him.
Oh, we found out the next day that they had been in an accident about three miles down the road. Thankfully, no one was seriously hurt, but I thanked God my son wasn't in the car. Perhaps God's protection at work? I think so.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

Evidence of God's protection. My younger son was waiting and waiting for an income tax refund. I even had to refile it with certified mail. He had a new girlfriend and wanted to use it to fix her car, fix his car and find an apartment.
The relationship went badly and they broke up. He was on the road when the check finally arrived. His response was "Thank God, that check was late." He said she was keeping him broke. Now he can fix his car, get financially ahead and move one. I have to remember that my boys have a Higher Power too.
