Day 4 in Sturgis

We got up this morning, swore we were sleeping in a Sauna, as the sun warmed up the tent quickly. We stumbled out feeling the effects of a few extra beers from last night, but nothing that some good coffee and breakfast wouldnt cure. So after straightening up our tent and grabbing a quick shower, we headed off in search of food. Not that what was being fixed at the homeless shelter wasnt appealing, but we were a little bit downwind from the Porta John truck doing its morning pump out. So we elected to find another location for some grub.

We putted past the Dragstrip and Glencoe and went back into town for something to eat. The sun was warm and even though it was early a lot of people must have had the same idea. We got through town ok, and headed out for Deadwood. Its a nice little putt and we caught up with a group that was headed that way, and slid in pretty much under the radar till we made it to Deadwood dicks Saloon. First time I've ever seen that many cops without a donut in sight. They were pretty friendly and just checked us out as we came in and shut down the bikes and said good mornin. Breakfast was good, and we elected to skip the traditional "Whisky in the Mornin"(its a long story) and we headed out on our own to just do a little poking around with nowhere to go. Did some people watching looked at a few things, and saddled back up after a couple hours.

We headed out for Devils Tower and kind of got lost in the crowd trying to get there. I couldnt believe some of the people, and how assinine they were. I know we were tourists too, but damn! Show some courtesy and respect. Dont putt along at 15 miles an hour on the highway, looking through the viewfinder of your video cam, and wobbling on 2 wheels because you dont know how to ride. I know Mike filled his viewfinder with the appropriate gesture, because he passed him close enough to grab the camera. We made it through the crowd of people finally and had a nice time.

Talked to a few people and had a couple of beers with lunch as we sat in awe of the immense rock structure that makes up the Tower. It's magnificent. If you ever saw "Close Encounters" then you have an idea. But I had never seen it up close before, just amazing. We hung out with a couple of other "Hoser's" from Chicago and had a good time. We BS'd a little(?) with them, and they did with us, exchanged e mail addresses and cards and such, and tipped back a few. Mike saw a little bit of a lull in the traffic so we said goodbye, and headed back towards Sturgis.

We figured out where all the traffic went as we got closer to Sturgis, but really didnt mind. These werent tourist class travelers. This was beginning to be what brought us all here, Bikers that ride every day they can. I've ridden in Snow, Sleet, Hail, Ice Storms, Heat over 110, Duststorms, and still do it, and so do they. You could tell them apart, their bikes werent new, but well kept, old graying leather jackets strapped to their bars, raccoon eyes from the wind and sun, and a comfortable worn pair of jeans over boots made for working and riding. They looked hard, but there eyes held the secret.

They didnt smile much, but there eyes danced when they laugh, and look right at you when they talk to you. Clear and Crisp. We stopped and finally found a place to park on Main St, and waded into the throngs of people. Ran into our new friends from the road that we had helped patch up. His leg was doing better, still limping a little, but he wasnt going to miss Main St for anything. He introduced us to most of the group he rode up with, and we were well accepted and didnt pay for a drink for the rest of the afternoon. I guess we patched him up right, because they amde sure that we were taken care of properly. Their President made it known that we were Firemen and our money wasnt any good today. (So much for that Whisky thing I told you about earlier) We found a place in their group and killed the rest of the afternoon, just talking and laughing and munching on some wings with them. Mike and I arent rookies at tis but we knew when to say when, and accepted the invitation to meet up later in the Rally.

We grabbed a couple of bottles of water and wandered around some more, sobering up and checkingout the booths and sites. After an hour or so we realized how late it was and headed for camp. The Cops were definately out on force as everyone started to head towards their respective homes and campsites. We got back and took another shower just to cool off and get ready for the concerts to start.
