A Sobering Blog

I've noticed more and more anti-smoking and anti-drug commercials on television of late and I feel that for some reason, one of the biggest evils that threatens our society as a whole is strangely not mentioned at all. This menace I speak of is alcohol. You hear nonstop the dangers of cigarettes and dope, but beer and liquor is accepted and to a certain extent, glamorized by over the hill athletes and actors showing us it's normal and "cool" to drink. Is this maybe because of the revenue generated from the alcohol industry through advertising on television which goes directly to the networks. Why do we never hear of the broken homes and the fatalities on the highways and the diseases caused directly and indirectly from alcohol consumption? This legal drug we know as alcohol has caused so much misery and so much death worldwide and I believe there is no such thing as a "responsible" drinker. To me, this is just another sugar coated myth to hide the grim facts of what some day will be the inevitable. We all, as adults, have all in one way or another been affected to some degree by alcohol at some point in our lives and without a doubt, these events have not been pleasant nor have they been without sorrow and sometimes, guilt. From the poor wino begging on the streets to the country club functions to the tailgating parties before football games each Saturday in the fall, alcohol has become such a big part of our lives that we have failed to notice the deadly ramifications we, as a civilized people, has given us the gift of and this is an addiction which nothing is ever done about until most times, it's too late.

How many families are killed by a smoker driving? My granddaughter just had her car totaled the other day by a guy that failed the sobrierty test and was taken off in handcuffs. She had made one payment on her new car. My ex was an alcoholic so I have little tolerence for excessive drinking. I remember years ago commenting to friends, why is everything we plan centered around drinking? I will have a glass of wine or maybe a beer, but seldom even do that. I have great respect that someone overcomes their alcoholism. They won't allow cigarette commercials on TV and many magazines but, alcohol they advertize! Notice how many during a sporting event. I agree with you. Alcohol abuse seems to be more socially acceptable, but causes such major problems for all of us whether directly (someone close) or indirectly (higher insurance premiums), not to mention the deaths and accidents caused by drunk drivers.

Great blog.
