Hypocrisy, Trees & Electric Cars

“I hope you have not been leading a double life, pretending to be wicked and being good all the time. That would be hypocrisy.”
― Oscar Wilde, The Importance of Being Earnest

A hypocrite is the kind of politician who would cut down a redwood tree, then mount the stump and make a speech for conservation. Adlai Stevenson I As citizens of this democracy, you are the rulers and the ruled, the law-givers and the law-abiding, the beginning and the end. Adlai Stevenson II

Thoughts about Adlai Stevenson's quote on redwood trees. The first thing I noticed about West Virginia is lots and lots of trees. If there were that many trees in California - it would be on fire all the time.

My California Firefighting Cousin reminds me that thinning the forest can be a good thing. It is fire prevention that enhances safety for people and wildlife. Shorter trees gives the deer more to eat so they don't encroach people areas as much.

I was not too happy when a tree fell on my car a few months ago. Fortunately the damage was minimal. Nevertheless, I am glad for the trees cut down to prevent them from falling on my home.

I have a friend who is an avid environmentalist. I accompanied her on protests and lobbying adventures on the pipeline. Later I discovered that my 0lder s0n works for the pipelines. He monitor the lines and stops them if they are getting ready to break. Thus he actually protects the environment.

I came to the realization that I can't lobby on this anymore. It's a conflict of interest. I am glad my s0n has a livelihood There are a number of coalminers who need to put food on the table. We all need fuel to keep our vehicles running.

I did attend an electric car show a few months ago. I noticed that the IBEW apprentices are learning to work on those cars. If IBEW is doing this in West Virginia, it might be what is on the horizon in the future.

We all have an ideal of the kind of person that we want to be. I frequently fall short of that ideal but keep on trying to progress but I don't pretend otherwise. That would be hypocrisy.

It is ironic how people who treat you badly scream the loudest when they get treated the same way.

Deer don't feed on trees....they eat the undergrowth in the forest and trees provide shade, and their roots hold the water in the ground, so the more plentiful, close and large the trees are, the less likely they will burn.....

As for preventing leaks in oil pipelines being good for the environment, That's like continuously hitting someone in the head with a hammer and then bandaging it and claiming you're doing a good deed ......

I have family members who are firefighters in California and assure me that a forest that is occasionally thinned out either by harvesting and controlled burning does ultimately make for a healthier forest.

Folks build their homes in the middle of a forest and wonders why it burns. Wood is fuel. West Virginia has LOTS of trees and a timber industry but if we had the dry spells that California does - we would have even more serious fire problems than California does.

While a world without fossil fuel is fantastic ideal, it's not a reality at this time. It's best to have someone monitor the pipelines to prevent disasters

THE BIG PROBLEM ABOUT ELECTRIC CARS IS FIGURING OUT HOW TO PRODUCE ENOUGH CLEAN ELECTRICITY FOR GENERAL CONSUMPTION AND AUTOMIBILES. IN WINTER THAT IS GOING TO BE A HUGE PROBLEM.
THERE HAS JUST BEEN A HUGE FOREST FIRE HERE, 7000 HECTARES DESTROYED BY FLAMES AND THE ISSUE OF CLEARING UNDERGROWTH AROUND HOMES HAS ARISEN. FORESTS NEED TO BE THINNED AND UNDERGROWTH CUT BUT NEGLECT IS THE NAME OF THE GAME. KIND OF SAD. AS FOR ADLAI STEVENSON, MY MOTHER WAS A BIG FAN OF HIS.

One of our nephews in a big city out east bought an electric car a few years ago. He was a great "green" enthusiast and posted and touted the virtues of it. Not sure what happened, but he now has a new gas powered car.

Sparkle when My sister and husband still lived in Red Deer, Alberta there were young trees down below their place. There was a wooded area just adjacent to the property where the deer used to hang out. They have to put something around the trees to keep the deer from eating the leaves on the trees. I guess those leaves on those young trees were tasty morsels for the deer.

Back in the days when I had a larger garden, the deer would go into it for dining adventures. I didn't mind them pruning my trees but when they ate the rest of my garden that was problematic. The deer could have at least thanked me for growing all that produce for them. When bowhunting season came. (allowed in city limits) I invited the hunters to set up in my backyard.
