Gotta Love Those Humble Wal-Mart Greeters

Charley, a new retiree-greeter at Wal-Mart, just couldn't seem get work on time. Every day he was 5, , 15 minutes late. But he was a good worker, really tidy, clean-shaven, sharp-minded and a real credit the company and obviously demonstrating their "Older Person Friendly" policies.
One day the boss called him into the office for a tal "Charley, I have tell you, I like your work ethic, you do a bang-up job when you finally get here, but your being late so often is quite bothersome."
"Yes sir, I know, and I am working on it."
"Well good, you are a team player. That's what I like hear.”
“Yes sir, I understand your concern and I’ll try harder.”
Seeming puzzled, the manager went on comment, “It's odd though you're coming in late. I know you're retired from the Armed Forces. What did they say you there if you showed up in the morning so late and so often?"
The man looked down at the floor, then smiled. He chuckled quietly, then said with a grin,
"They usually saluted and said,
"Good morning General, can I get your coffee sir?"

Chuckling...… it's a good example of how we never know the history that makes people who they are or why they are like they are.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

When I was at college in Victoria, I would walk in a popular sea-side park on Sundays....It was an old established park with a duck pond and old plantings of exotic trees, shrubs and flowers.....The area was a favourite of retirees.

One day I struck up a conversation with an elderly gentleman who told me very interesting stories.....I loved listening to him and we had many long conversations. I found out later that he was a well known writer of WW2 history.....I made conversation with many other elderly men and women at that park and and in the small tea-shops in the neighbourhood. I met many extremely interesting and entertaining characters there and even someone who had personally known my hero, the painter and writer Emily Carr, who had lived in the same neighbourhood and had frequented the park.

I couldn't believe the untapped riches of character I had discovered in those elders ....and they really appreciated a pretty young girl who hung on every word they uttered.

Gray it is true ---a 30 minute conversation can yield a years worth of experience if one has sense enough to listen, and think.

Many years ago as an young assistant manager for then restaurant giant Howard Johnsons, I wanted to impress by doing a really good cleaning of our hard surface floors both in the kitchen and behind our two long counters.

I mixed up a two part bleach and ammonia formula in a large hot water bucket and went to work. It took a few minutes before the fumes began to grow quites strong and noticeable.

Soon the three waitresses, me and the old dishwasher Bill were all in tear and had to go outside. Thank god it was summer season and not freezing out as old Bill who never said a word but did his job in great fast fashion asked me if I had mixed bleach with ammonia?

I was then informed I had created a deadly vapor mix of CHLORINE GAS.. Using the gas station across the streets phone, I called the local fire dept.who promptly responded.

They both treated the mop bucket, removed it and used blowers to clean the rest. of the toxic fumes.

I asked old Bill a bit later how he happened to know about Chlorine gas ect.?

He simply said that when he was much younger, he had been a PALOMAR CHEMIST.

Bill and I got along great. I ignored his usually once a hour two minute visit to his downstairs footlocker to take a nip out of his small whiskey bottle. He did excellent work showing great pride and dedication thus max accomplishments.

My request to my manager to get Bill a 25 cent an hour raise was denied as I could only act by being friendly and saying hello in greetings or a now and then smile with phrase for a good job.

Yes the effects of Alcoholism are indeed sad.

The blog above brought back such memories of old Bill back over 50 years ago now.
