HolidayPlans,Lushes,&PumpkinCurrySoup

My and I usually get together for Thanksgiving the local Chinese Restaurant. Covid-19 has changed that reality. Chinese Restaurants are closed. My and I live on opposite sides of the county. He has his friends and I have mine. We opted for a raincheck.

My plan was to stay home with a complete turkey dinner. 60 seconds and it's done. I got an invite a girlfriend's house. I frequently take her and her husband to medical appointments and shopping since neither he nor his wife drive. Mr. Semper Fi is a retired Marine who can be a bit of a lush and smokes a lot of medical marijuana. I figure it's his life choices and his business.

So yesterday, I was their home and mentioned that it was 43 year of Step teetotalling. I commented that the conservative route is often the best way for those new in recovery to go because it offers needed boundaries.

Suddenly Mr. Semper Fi became an "expert" on Step Recovery. Step Programs are a "crutch" and a "cult." Another friend came into the house, got himself a beer and suddenly, I was hearing it from both of them.

Yada Yada Snore, Blah, Blah, Blah, I am glad to be a teetotaler because lushes frequently make azzzzzzzzezzzzzz of themselves. While these two will have to deal with thier hangovers, I am going to have to recover from a different kind of over indulgent.

The reality of getting older. My digestive system is really sensitive and there is a price to be for Thanksgiving feasting. So it's Pumpkin Curry Soup and intermittent fasting for the weekend.

Pumpkin Curry Soup = chicken bone broth, coconut milk, canned pumpkin, and spices - Toss them into the instant pot for minutes, into freezer cubes and heat up. Intermittent Fasting = 8 hour window for meals, hour fasting.

Next week, I have a Christmas Dinner with the local GOP Club. I will be installed as a regional vice president. Hanging out with the conservatives was one of the sanest moves I ever made. .

Anything marked Hormel is a no-no in our house, way too much sodium for Joe. Two of our girls brought us Thanksgiving supper. Both are great cooks, but there again, way too much sodium for Joe. Not that they add that much salt, but cooking with canned foods carries that penalty for people with medical conditions like his.
Both of us did over indulge though, and paid for it. Him with retained fluids for the next day, and me with some gastric distress. I took two ginger capsules and one marshmallow root capsule and that helped a lot better than antacids. So, I took them again a couple times Friday and once so far today.
Come Christmas, we are going to turn down their offers, except for perhaps some meat and dessert.

I laughed at your 60 second turkey and dressing meal

It probably was good. Most of those are tasty!

Your recipe for pumpkin soup sounds a lot like mine.....I add a spoon of red curry-paste, sauteed onion and garlic, cumin, fresh ginger and some lemon-grass if I have it......I usually make a bunch and freeze some......my sensitive digestion likes it too.

I don't really have a set recipe for pumpkin soup. Chicken broth, coconut milk and canned pumpkin are the base and I experiment with the spices. I am going to try and grow ginger. That always helps the tummy.

I don't cook or use salt but I suspect that it is in canned food. It is one of the vices that I haven't paid a whole lot of attention to yet since there are so many others that are definitely on my no no list. I may have to try the marshmallow capsules along with ginger to see if that helps. /

I took Nexium for years for GERD and heartburn. Then an ER doc told me about ginger and marshmallow root. He said he also had taken Nexium, but the long term side effects were not good so he searched for a natural path to get off of it.
I tried what he suggested, made ginger tea and added a spoon of marshmallow root. It was as he said it would be..... AWFUL. Unlike him, I just could not drink it down. So I went back to the health food store and talked to them. Luckily, both the ginger and the marshmallow root comes in capsule form.
I started taking them twice a day, and cutting down the Nexium to just 5 days a week. Sudden stopping it causes a rebound acid problem. Then I went to 4 days a week, then 3, then 2, and stopped. All the while taking the ginger and marshmallow root twice a day. After being off the Nexium with no problems for 3 or 4 weeks, I cut the other down to once a day for another month and when there were no problems, I started only taking it when I had indigestion. It works for me.

When Gene suffered from heartburn, he dissolved Pure Baking Soda (Arm & Hammer) in water. That helped immediately.

Handy meal for sure, but nothing beats fresh turkey and home made stuffing.
The soup sounds rather tasty though.

Congratulations on 43 years of sobriety - your drinking days must seem a lifetime ago and how much more productive your life would have been since. The conservative route often being the best way to those new in recovery (establishing necessary boundaries) makes sense.

Interesting suggestions for treating heartburn and GERD - dissolving baking soda in water for instant relief sounds promising - how much baking soda - 1 teaspoon to 250ml water?

Lilium, he sprinkled the baking soda into the glass by guess and added about 1 cup of water. I would say take 1 level teaspoon. Myself, I never suffer from heartburn or gastric discomfort.

Thanks myseek, your feedback is appreciated as I tend to err on the side of caution when uncertain. I sometimes suffer from indigestion so I'll make a point of trying your suggestion next time I'm in discomfort - fast relief would be much appreciated.
