No Civil Rights for Ilhan Omar?

Omar said on CBS's "Face the Nation."
"It's important for us to make sure that we are not forgetting the aftermath of 9/11, [when] many Americans found themselves now having their civil rights stripped from them, and so what I was speaking to was that as a Muslim, not only was I suffering as an American who was attacked on that day, but the next day I woke up as my fellow Americans were now treating me as suspect," she added.

The question is what are the Civil Rights that have been taken away from Omar? She came to the United States as a refugee from a Muslim country where she didn't have any civil rights to be violated. So after the 9/11 attacks, the USA citizens were suspicious of Muslims in the United States. Dah! The same thing happened to the Germans during WWI. Japanese Americans were sent to internment camps during WWII.

Was Omar immediately deported, stripped of her property, or incarcerated because of her headgear? Contrary to Media Reports, FBI Hate Crime Statistics Do Not Support Claims of Anti-Muslim Backlash

Granted, the woman is not Ms. Popularity. Her Trump-bashing might get her brownie points among the liberals but she'll find no flavor for her fare among Moderates and Conservates.

If the quest for reelection does not go her way, perhaps she will screech about her civil rights being violated. I certainly hope that scenario happens.

If folks decide to tar, feather, and throw eggs at Ilhan Omar, that might be a violation of her civil rights but they are not required to send her love letter.

The Italians were also mistreated during the war. In Charleston, SC, Joe's dad's short wave radio was confiscated. He was born here, but his parents were naturalized citizens, and Joe's mother had not yet become a citizen. Authorities came to the house to investigate them and found the radio. In California, they were putting Italians in camps along with those others.

My German ancestors came to the United State in 1860 (paternal grandfather) and the American Revolution Era (paternal grandmother). Soldiers on both sides. The Germans in the USA were mostly from older immigrant waves and well integrated into the United States the 1900's. . They were actually the largest group of non-English speaking immigrants in the U.S.A. During WW I there was significant anti-German sentiment but 20 years later that had all but died down. Italians, on the other hand, were largely recent immigrants. The interesting part is that the Italian community in the United States was largely from Southern Italy and Sicily, while Mussolini's power base was primarily in Northern part thus they would not have been pro-Mussolini regardless.

There was some internment of recent German and Italian immigrants but not to the extent that the Japanese-Americans permitted.

She DOES have rights. She has the right to remain silent. She has the right to an attorney. If no attorney….
