Book Exchange Finds, Religious Liberty & Swearing Jack Waller

Quaker Gatherings always have a table for book exchanges which is an economical way to find books for our local Book Club Meetings. Frequently if I get too many books, I will start selling them on the Bay.

One book will go into my kitchen shelf with cookbooks with a recipe being utilized for our monthly potluck. Another book gave me an idea for a workshop at the next gathering. "A History of Christianity - Readings in the History of the Church from the Reformation to the Present"

The workshop will deal with our ancestors and their role in the reformation. Once upon a time, Catholicism was the law in the lands. Martin Luther changed all of that for altruistic reasons while Henry XIII ditches the Catholic Church for his own personal reasons.

Suddenly, the Catholics were on the run, thus I have a bunch of ancestors who hopped on a ship, sailed to the New World, and founded Maryland so that they could be Catholics in peace.

There is also the Wallers of Endfield who relocated to Virginia with the blessings of the British King. They were Anglicans aka the Church of England until my several times Great Uncle "Swearing Jack Waller" decided to changed directions.

In 1766, Baptists were persecuted by the state of Virginia, and Elder Lewis Craig, a Baptist preacher, was indicted by a grand jury. He was indicted for preaching the Baptist gospel and holding worship services without the permission of the Anglican Church. Swearing Jack was one of the grand jury who indicted Lewis Craig for preaching. Elder Craig was convicted and imprisoned.
Swearing Jack Waller was convinced that Craig was possessed of something that he had never seen in man before. He thought within himself that he should be happy if he could be of the same religion with Mr. Craig.

Swearing Jack Waller became Baptist Preacher Jack Waller. He and Elder Lewis Craig were in prison together for preaching the Baptist gospel. Pastor Jack Waller preached to the troops during the American Revolution. His brother Ben Waller kept company with the creators of the United States Constitution. The Waller Brothers were instrumental in the creation of the First Amendment and Freedom of Religion.

Wallers Baptist Church
Partlow, Virginia in Spotsylvania County was the first established Baptist Church in the United States. It is still an active church to this day.

History can be fascinating..... reveals the good and the bad.
Your book exchange thing is a good idea. Years ago, we had a give and receive day once or twice a year.
Everyone brought things they wanted to donate, and then on that day, volunteers arranged them all over the church, and people of the church came and received whatever they wanted. We were even free to bring a guest to receive. No money exchanged hands, and we got rid of things we didn't need and found things that we did. Left overs were given to a small local charity that gave stuff away.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.
