The Woman with the Zircon Earrings.

When I first travelled to Washington D.C. it brought back memories from over a decade ago. There were homeless people and panhandlers everywhere. I dealt with this scenario in Ventura, California frequently but not so much in West Virginia.

There was so much opulence yet so much desperation. One year I was at the Union Station Food Court and purchased a meal for a young man. My quaker girlfriend was at a deli the Judicial Square station. She also purchased a meal for a homeless man. We met at the Judicial Square station to spend the night in a nearby Church for a protest/lobbying event. The next day we were escorted out of the FERC building by homeland security. I quickly concluded I would much rather lobby than protest. It's more productive.

The first time I went to DC, I stayed at the William Penn House. It was right after Grumpy's death and the healing place I needed. I was heading to the East Market Metro Station and homeward bound when I ran across a woman sleeping on a sofa on the sidewalk. it was apparently being thrown out. Sometimes people leave things on the sidewalk for other folks to pick up and utilize. I did a quick prayer for the woman and headed to the station.

I soon realized I was going in the wrong direction. I turned around and headed for the station in the right direction. Once again, I encountered the lady sleeping on the discarded sofa. I took a closer look at her. The one thing I noticed on both encounters was her sparkling square-cut zircon earrings. I frequently wore those type of earrings when I worked in bakeries. Dangling earrings were not allowed.

This was a woman fighting to maintain some semblance of dignity and being a woman despite her challenging circumstance. Once again, I visualized her in healing light and sent a prayer to the cosmos for divine intervention in her life.

I had about dollars on . I placed it in her shoe to find when she wakes up. I don't know the woman's story or how she will use . It's none of my business. is between her and her Higher Power. I do know we are called to pray for people and frequently we are called be the answer to someone's prayer. We can even be the answer to our own prayers. Faith without works is dead. We can do the footwork but the results are not always what we expect.

Too often people put strings on the money they give, or the good deeds they perform. As you said, it is between the receiver and the Lord..... once we are obedient and give or do, our part is complete. We seldom know the outcome.
I have heard of people taking old purses or ziplock bags and putting a bar of soap, toothpaste and brush, deodorant, and other necessities in it along with some money and carrying it in their car to give out to a homeless person. I have never done that, although it sounds like a good idea.
One time, my young son and I had just went through the drive in at a fast food place and planning on eating it in the parking lot of the store we needed to shop at. As we pulled into the parking lot, we drove by a couple with a homeless sign. When we parked, and reached for our food, we both looked at each other said nothing...... but he smiled and I said, "Go ahead." He grabbed the food and took it to the couple. They needed it much more than we did, but we got more benefit from it than they did.

Give us this day our daily bread - Sometimes what we give is enough to make it through one more day.

Matthew 6:34 34 Therefore do not fret about tomorrow, for tomorrow will take care of itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

What a wonderful lesson that you taught your son that helped the homeless couple survive for one more day. We can't fix everything but we can do something

I know what you mean...…. it is so much more blessed to give...… and to do it without anyone knowing is so much more enjoyable for me.
But something else I learned a long time ago...… that it is also a blessing to be a good receiver. For there to be givers, there has to be receivers. Many do not receive blessings because of pride, but a thankful receive is a blessing to a giver also.

I have a friend who is conspicuously generous, but refuses anything from others....... she is also chronically late......She keeps others waiting all the time. It seems that she can't allow others to be generous to her, so she compensates by selfishly keeping us waiting, like she won't let us give, but steals our time.........Humans are bewildering......It's like she needs to choose what she gives and what she receives........I think generosity includes to generously accept what other offer.....
