United States Politics and How It Works.

I am very fortunate that if I want to take a trip to Washington D.C. - I can walk a few blocks from my home, hop on an afternoon train and later that evening, I am at the Union Station in the Capitol.

I have participated in a few protest and it's certainly a way to make a statement but to get results - more has to be done. Anyone who gets pass the security system can enter the Senate and Congressional Buildings and pop in to visit the Senate and Congressional offices to talk to the staff. Sometimes, there is the opportunity to talk to Representative or Senator him/herself.

A few years ago, I was with the FCNL for a lobbying event. We were able to get appointments with the West Virginia Senators and one of the Congress Representative. We stopped at the office of the others to present or concerns. We got a message from Manchin's office that he wanted to meet us personally but was only available on a Tuesday. We had already talked to Manchin's staff on the issue. My lobbying partner was leaving but I had plans for an extended stay. I kept the appointment with plans to talk to him about the drug problem in West Virginia. I contacted FCNL and they sent an intern with me who presented a bill to the Senator on Sentencing Reform. That intern is now going to medical school. Bravo!!!

Last year was the People's Climate Change March and a follow-up lobbying event. There were folks from both sides of the political spectrum talking about the issue. A few months later, I went to a DAR Continental Congress gathering. Health Care was the big issue at the time. I decided to take advantage of the wave so I headed over to the FCNL Office where they helped put together a package to present to the Senator. They sent an intern along with me as I simply popped into the offices to present the case for affordable health care.

How seriously would I be taken if I were one of the dingbats storming the Hart building and Senator Manchin's office. They were screaming and chanting as the police were hauling them away. They were banging on the Supreme Court door and getting themselves arrested again. I may win some and lose some but at least I can be taken seriously.

I LOVE our newly elected Lady in Red in the Congressional Office.

I wonder what the FCNL would think of your change in political belief now. Do they know you are now a registered trumper?
Do YOU know that the Society of Friends is directly opposed to trump's policies on almost everything because those policies are absolutely against their beliefs?

So...how can you call yourself a Quaker and still be devoted to trump?

It is really absurd how an individual with NO religious/spiritual beliefs dictate how those of us who do have a spiritual path should think, feel or believe.

I love your involvement in the political scene, especially your ability to see through the hype of the process. The news has become the news and about half the American people believe what they see on the television.

US politics runs on money.
Thus those who have the money run politics.

Youse guys really need campaign financing reform.

While those screaming mobs might get media attention, it is apparent that the sensible approach is what you and others like you are doing, and getting the Congress people's attention.
You go, gal !

I enjoyed reading this blog very much. Quite informative indeed and interesting as well.

My first thoughts in reading your title of United States Politics and How It Works were three words.

Money---Power-----Greed in no certain order.

If only God could chance the give the voters 10% and share the other 90% with other lawyers or elected officials.

I still support many of the same issues regardless of political party. Health Care, sentencing reform, immigration reform, environmental concerns. When I was in D.C. lobbying on the pipeline issue there were folks from both sides supporting the same issue.

What I am walking away from is the dingbats following and harassing Republicans, terrorizing them and their families. I certainly don't endorse the criminal behavior of the individual who shot at Republicans playing baseball. I didn't vote for Trump but I still have issues with people blatantly disrespecting the President..

If a religion gave me a list of who I had to vote for or the required beliefs, I would be looking for another religion. I don't think the Quakers will be writing me out of their meetings anytime too soon. We have a diversity of people with varying beliefs.
