Looking back

Sometimes we look back at things in our life that brings a little smile to our face. I remember It was a cold saturday morning about 3:00 AM When dad came into the bedroom and and are you awake wilber, I jumped out of bed knowing we had a 100 mile trip in front of us. My Brother was in the Air Force and was in England, so it would be just Dad and I plus our Beagle Called Crip. We were going to Newark, Ark. to do some swamp rabbit hunting. I really like hearing the crip get on a rabbit and hear the bark. We had a camper on the back of our pick-up that we slept in and that just made the weekend that much greater. We had a great weekend we limited out on rabbits. What I remembered most was the time we spent around the camp fire talking and dad's Friend who came by who owned the property we were hunting on and sitting with us talking about times gone by and how things had changed. I still remember to this day how we had a coffee pot that dad put the egg shells in the bottom to take the acid out of the coffee. He said made the coffee taste better, I still haven't found a cup of coffee that taste as good as it did back then( could have been who I was with). Love Ya All Wilber

love ya all wilber

I remember Dad teaching me how to make coffee in a pan or pot like that, with the egg shell. Wonderful over a campfire! I have done it on the stove too, even tastes great like that!

My girl's dad and I lived in Bremerton, Washington when we were first married. He was in the Navy and stationed there while the ship, USS Hancock was in dry docks. 3 other couples and us went camping for the weekend on Mt. Ranier. Borrowed camping gear from Special Services.

Everyone kind of stood around and said it would be nice to have a bonfire...believe it or not, no one knew how to build one so I did. They were impressed with this gal! haha No one had thought to bring a coffee pot. Sailors and coffee go together!!

I said that I could make some in a pan. Everyone looked skeptical. I put the water in, scoops of coffee for each cup and one for the pot and a couple of egg shells. I was getting tickled watching them watch me as I knew the end result would be good. When it had boiled for 5 minutes I poured a bit of cold water over it to settle the grounds. They all said it was the best coffee they had ever drank. Wanted to know how I learned these things...I told them I had been a Girl Scout from Brownies to my Senior yearand that my dad taught me how to make the coffee this way.

P.S. I guess we had camp stoves too. My girl's dad had no idea I had "hidden talents"!
