A Little Good News ......

Anne Murray

I rolled out this morning
Kids had the mornin' news show on
Bryant Gumbel was talkin' 'bout the fighting in Lebanon
Some senator was squawkin' 'bout the bad economy
It's gonna get worse you see, we need a change in policy
There's a local paper rolled up in a rubber band
One more sad story's one more than I can stand
Just once how I'd like to see the headline say
"Not much to print today, can't find nothin' bad to say", because
Nobody robbed a liquor store on the lower part of town
Nobody OD'ed, nobody burned a single buildin' down
Nobody fired a shot in anger, nobody had to die in vain
We sure could use a little good news today
I'll come home this evenin'
I'll bet that the news will be the same
Somebody takes a hostage, somebody steals a plane
How I want to hear the anchor man talk about a county fair
And how we cleaned up the air, how everybody learned to care
Whoa, tell me
Nobody was assassinated in the whole Third World today
And in the streets of Ireland, all the children had to do was play
And everybody loves everybody in the good old USA
We sure could use a little good news today
Nobody robbed a liquor store on the lower part of town
Nobody OD'ed, nobody burned a single buildin' down
FADE
Nobody fired a shot in anger, nobody had to die in vain
We sure could use a little good news today.

Songwriters: Rory Michael Bourke / Charlie Black / Tommy Rocco

Remember back when the news was a local half hour TV program, with sports and weather? And the national news was also a half hour show, and it was just the news without the opinion. Our other source for news was the paper. We read and listened and formed our own opinions.
Then, in our area, the local weathermen started interrupting broadcasts with weather alerts and began to see if they could out-hype the other channels.
Then came "progress" and cable news came into our homes with all the opinion and hype and it has turned into a monster! I turn it off and listen to old time rock-n-roll music on the TV.
I remember a magazine from years ago..... was printed on paper like a newspaper..... but it was filled with good news stuff about current events and articles of interest. Don't remember the name of it, but we subscribed to it and I found the "news" to be getting depressing even back then, and always looked forward to reading it.
We have always had bad stuff happening, but the constant harping and hype is ridiculous in my opinion.

Live happier. You don't have to attend every argument to which you are invited.

Want to hear good news, ET? Listen to the song "Democracy" by Leonhard Cohen.
I haven't watched tv for the last 3 weeks and don't have the urge to turn it on. The sun is shining, the birds are waiting in line to pick the seeds I put out every morning.
When I want to know what's going on in the world, I read the news on the internet.
Soothing music in the background keeps me balanced.

Gee Earthy the only Anne Murray I know is a well known Canadian singer from Spring Hill, Nova Scotia. She became well known in the late 60's. I guess you aren't talking about her.

I will have to listen to this Earthy. I always liked her. You don't hear so much about her these days.

No, Shar, I haven't either, but then, I don't think she was ever a big grandstander. She slid in on her raw talent, made her mark, and seems to have faded into obscurity over the years. A large part of her appeal, IMO, was humility and understatement.

I have a couple of her CD's and for the first time in a long, long while I shut down the 'news' and played them yesterday. They were very soothing.

I haven't heard that one, Seek … I'll check in on it.. I have six CD's by Cohen, and it's not on even one of them.

That is interesting, ET. Maybe the reason why, is the sarcastic text. It is on the CD my granddaughter sent me for Christmas. Democracy (is coming to the USA......)
I listened to it on Ytube.
