Oh, I love Dahlias........When we immigrated, we had no family here, so we adopted an elderly couple who lived next door as our grandparents. We invited them over for coffee and cookies we had baked and asked them formally....LOL....Their son and family lived abroad, so it was a good deal for everyone. ...

The Grandpa was retired and had expanded his lifelong hobby of growing and breeding Dahlias. He grew a couple of acres of them every year.....and he hired me, the Summer I was 12, to help him. I helped out for 3 Summers. In the Fall, we harvested the corms and placed them in bushel-baskets in a large shed, to dry. In the Spring, we separated the corms and sorted them. It was impossible to predict exactly what colours they would produce, because they were free-pollinating. That was the most fun part, to see the unique flowers when they bloomed. Grandpa's love for the flowers was contagious and spilled over.....My favourites were the darkest wines and coppers and the ones, like you have there, that catch the light and hold it in their petals. Thanks for sharing them with us......

I remember the first flowers that my husband, Lawrence brought me. He was late getting home from work one morning, I didn't feel well and was totally pissed. He came into the house and put them on the table and I didn't even see them at first. A dozen red roses, and I was so upset and insensitive that I blurted out, "I don't even like roses!"
It was a long time before he brought me flowers again, and finally he asked me what I do like. Carnations are my favorites, so that is what I received from then on.... but not very frequently. Our budget was pretty tight.
I told Joe that story early on, so he would not make the same mistake. LOL. He brought me flowers occasionally, and even had them delivered way out here once. Now that he no longer goes out by himself, he tells me to get flowers whenever I want. I still enjoy them, but not as much as when someone else gets them for me.

Earthy frozen dinners aren't the worst thing you can have. This past week I haven't been cooking at all as I had a little fall and my bones ache all over. So the deli at Safeway comes in handy and also they have an array of frozen dinners. Even my sister who cooks all the time has bought frozen dinners as she says it is just much easier. As for flowers I don't have a man in my life to buy for me but a small group that I belong to in my complex got me a lovely plant of small yellow mums. It cheered my day.

Pretty flowers, ET. . As they say, you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.
