do your own research, make your own decisions

a short time ago on a trip with my youngest , her husband, my grands, i was shown a few pics of the difference between a pipeline and a site where lithium was mined. why? what is lithium and why is it important one may ask? i will say that whether you come at it from a religious or biblical perspective or a scientifical one, we are stewards of our planet and should take care of it. as with most inventions or "new ways" to make our human lives more convenient or comfortable, there is a cost. and many times we've only to find out those cost in much later years....ie the use of mercury in various items, lead, oils and its derivatives. no one foresaw that 100 years after the first cars run on gas, there would be such a multitude of them and those proclaiming the hazards of exhaust emissions. with that being said let's take a look at something from todays world.
many who want, proclaim the benefits of going from fossil fuels to electric cars, a lessening of a carbon imprint on the world. some times, we as humans can, fall into a group of those who can't see the forrest because we concentrate on the tree. most anytime we, humans, go mine an element from the earth, there is a cost, either in health, geological or environment. the pictures i have hopefully added, show the difference between what finished pipelines look like and what it looks like mining for lithium. why lithium? all EV vehicles run off batteries with a lithium base, mixed with cobalt, manganese, nickel and graphite. the mixture of these create a chemical reaction that generates electricity, which the car or vehicle runs off of. the battery, once it's charge is low enough or out, can be recharged over time, depending on the size of the car and the battery it needs. each time it is recharged its capacity is deminished. the information i got was that most will last 10-20 years, but that depends on how much it is driven, the miles one puts on the vehicle. one would ask, can it be renewed, rebuilt, made to use again? every article i read mentioned that many of the car parts are renewable only 5% of the batteries are. so where do they go? thrown away, winding up in land fills or other places, only to leak the metals contained in them into the ground and water. while these metals are found in the human body and needed, one gets most of them in a reasonably healthy diet. look up the side effects of each of these metals when over exposed, it will stun and amaze you. the mining of lithium is documented causing numerous effects on the surrounding water that is used to mine,(it takes 500,000 gallons of water to produce 1 ton of usable lithium-ion.) fish kills and other herd animal (cows, sheep, horses etc.) and creatures in the wild. the photos show the how litium mining leaves large holes in the earth, with irrevicable geological and environmental damage. one might say, fill it up with dirt! from where? you'd have to have dirt dug from somewhere to fill it up again? then there's the question of what contaminates would you find there to pollute the new dirt? well fill it up with water and make a recreational lake for swimming, boating, fishing. would you go in water, or eat something from a body of water that could over expose you and your family to a danger? and there is a definate limited amount of lithium, and most any metals you can harvest from the earth. oil found in the earth come from decomposed materials over time. the water used to mine lithium promotes, contributes to drought, less drinking or home use water, less success on vegetable and grain farming, production and harvesting. one would ask, well what's the answer? i don't have any but maybe one, and it's definitely say "no way in hell!" i will give that answer later. my point is this. i'm all for improvements, taking care of the planet and such. we must not grab onto something new just because it sounds good now. there should be a lot of questions, such as any short term effects, long term effects to our health, environment, geologic. let's not look at the tree and neglect the forest. get a whole picture. get all the facts, from both sides. then ask yourself if needed, which is the least harmful. and then, like the Oracle in "the Matrix" trilogy said to Neo, "i'm waiting for you make up your own damn mind!" don't follow talking points, ideology, popularity, influential, because of political influence or party. i'm reminded of the later, the political ideology or influence, of what a famous person said about politicians. "politicians and diapers are much alike. they both need to be changed often. and much for the same reasons!" Samuel Clemmons, (aka....Mark Twain)

did i make a mistake here. i was trying to start my own blog
however i did get back on for my suggestion to prevent geological and environmental damage....go back to horse and oxen buggies, wagons, riding the horses and for overseas travel use sail ships. an oh, here's a novel suggestion. walk and write letters.

EXACTLY, jcs !!!!

I've been saying this ever since electric vehicles started to be promoted as the 'be all and end all' solution to saving the environment.

I'm too lazy to do my own research.
i rely on Fox News to tell me what to believe.

You should do your own research on "paragraphs" ...

i don't rely on any news station for truth. any can have some but most will only tell you what they want. hence the reason those who promote the use of electric battery cars don't tell you the whole story. we need another Paul Harvey who would tell you the "rest of the story!"

Great blog.
Almost everything invented has some type of by product and has an effect on the environment.
Gasoline was thrown away as useless in the beginning.
The key to the future is in finding the way to utilize the byproduct.

My grandson is a chemical engineer in research. I have him working on utilizing nuclear waste and different ways to utilize the products of spent batteries. LOL

Humans are known for overcoming obstacles and moving on. An obstacle today can be an advantage tomorrow with the creative mindset.

I can't / we can't, historicaly has never accomplished anything.

Looking forward to more of your informative blogs.
Party On!

Welcome to the blogs. Interesting and thought provoking subject. I'm afraid we are becoming a society that either pays absolutely no attention to anything, just grab what we want..... or listens to the constant advertising (propaganda) that bombards us on all the cable news channels.
I've not done much research on the EV and their batteries, but I haven't heard much positive about them, and I've known a couple of people who bought them, thought they were absolutely wonderful, but for some reason went back to gasoline powered vehicles.
My main subject of research at the moment tends to be in medicine, alternative choices, and nutrition for specific conditions.
If you would make your print larger, (I use a size 3) it would be easier for some of us to read.

First blog? I like it!

I have been doing research on EV's, but as far as I can tell, we aren't ready for the transition yet. There was an article about this cab company in France that only used EV's for it's cabs, and now, those cabs sit in an auto graveyard and the old batteries are putting toxins into the soil. Besides that, the batteries are expensive to replace. Did you hear about the guy who burned his EV when he found out what the cost of a new battery would be? It's been awhile since I read those articles, but I'm sure they're out there somewhere.

I understand that our pipelines were shut down to force us all into the GND, but not everyone can just go out and replace their wheels with an EV, besides the fact that charging stations aren't abundant enough to compensate said vehicles. Sure, you could probably get a charging station put into your garage to plug your car into it, but that has to be done every night because the battery drains if it is not in use.

Too bad they didn't come up with a solar vehicle that charges and when you start driving the rotation of the wheels would also charge the battery, like one of those crank style radios. There would be no need for a large lithium battery under the hood, but then, no one would be making money for charging your vehicle, we wouldn't need charging stations, and isn't that what all this BS is about?

Basically, we need to stop driving so much...We have to re-design our cities...It's all just built up as a hodge-podge based on cheap gas and private cars.. Urban sprawl and societal addictions to disposable goods and the big bugaboo... CONVENIENCE....

i'm not sure what is in the future. my point is all this is to grab onto something new without asking a lot of questions, looking into the future or at least trying to. i do know that there are alternatives to fossil fuels but at what cost. if the cost is more damaging then stick with what we have until more becomes available. and i know this by watching a man on the tv show "mountain men," in north carolina who ran a truck on fumes from burning sticks and wood chips in what looked like a still on the back of the truck. he ran a line for the fumes, which are nothing but gases, to the carb. he used it for years until he forgot to apply the emergency brake on a slight downhill backwoods road and the truck rolled downhill, crashing bad enough it couldn't be repaired. there are many ingenious ways out there.

The only way to save the planet is to remove humans from the equation.. Everything is a trade off.. and the planet is losing.

There are no REAL choices here. Too many people too, too few resources, and too much garbage..

there is no promise for forever.. we have limited time...that's it. there are no answers .. no extensions of time.. A stitch of time ain't gonna save US

Accept it....and while you can...

Party On!

nileyears69 made the comment about the cost of the replacing the batteries. well, they're supposed to last 10-20 years yet, that depends on how many miles you put on the vehicle. most estimates of how much miles the average person puts on a vehicle in my eyes is quite low. so the hope is you would trade the car in or sell it before the battery would need to be replaced. when you have something that runs off a chemical reaction of metals, you have the potential or something going wrong way before it is of no use. the information i got online, and being honest i didn't look for any date to see when it was written so it may be a few years old and the prices may be more. depending on the size of the car and the battery needed to run it, the prices ranged from $5300- over $13,000.

As the world becomes over populated disease becomes a huge issue, given long distance travel which spreads it along with germs etc. derived from waste products. Therefore disease serves to lesson the population.

WW3 over energy that we are in now is serving to lessen world population. Nuclear is inevitable. It is the nature of the world in order for some to survive.

Survival of the fittest (most powerful). It has been happening from day one.

When the powerful blow themselves up the lesser developed will be left to
go on. I can only hope I am one of them.

On second thought I had rather not live to be 140 years old. LOL
It's been a hell of a fun ride.
Plus the fish are biting. LOL
Party ON

People who don' want to be here shouldn't be here.. People who shouldn't be here are still here. The irony of the human trait of saving lives. When there is just too many in the lifeboat. Good luck, making any difference now, by the time that could be decided.. it will be too late.
I am a reasonable person who choose not to live in fantasy-land..So i don't ask the impossible, i don't demand the impossible.. When all i can do is read the writing on the wall.
