Every now & then this blond packratt finds another "treasure." Out at Grandpa & Grandma's farm behind a shed is a metal bucket used to take ashes from the wood burning cook-stove out to dispose of them safely.

I dumped the dirt & weeds out of the metal container leaving some roots embedded in the rusty tin. By cleaning the hot ashes from our fireplace into the ash-bin I burned them off

The good old wire brush knocked off a lot of the rust....

However, it is the diamond infused brush that gets IN to really clean the surface.

After cleaning the dust from the surface with a "strong solvent" I began painting with a deep penetrating metal based paint.

This paint is an old school product of grandpa's... ( Probably illegal in 29 of the 50 states) BUT it sinks into the cracks sealing them from any further corrosion.

I don't really know what the final color of this ash-bin will be... gold... silver, Harley Davidson metallic blue! This project is just unfolding here today.

In the second picture you see some traces of red paint. Way back ... another blog topic.. there was a company >> IDEAL<< used red paint in the company logo that ,made all kinds of galvanized metal products water tanks, feed bunks and maybe ash-bins. I read about the company's WWII military contributions with a rare Female CEO directing the war effort. DAMMMM Chemo has me sick here tonight or I'd try to look up on this Company. Seems to me it was Iowa based.

Is it not too heavy to carry outside to clean? Preserve it for the next generation to see and ponder about, Darter!

That ask bucket is a treasure. Not too many of them to be found anymore. There are reproductions, of course, but there is nothing like the old originals. In my youth, I used to carry out the ashes from the wood cookstove and wood heater in one of those buckets.

We got 4" of snow here this morning, which I shoveled from my place and a neighbor's place. It took me a couple hours and I got very tired. At my age I shouldn't be doing that, but somebody had to do it. At 10 pm, it is +2F, clear, calm.

Few and far between Roger.... I'd just remembered it out behind the shed so I drove over and got it.

You, sir are an artist.....Your ash bucket is very cool......I have a couple of old galvanized laundry tubs that I have turned into planters......I used one of them to hold firewood back when I was heating with wood-stove..........

I've got the metallic blue going on, however, it is so slow drying. It's snowing so I am staying IN anyways.

Pretty darn cool. I haven't seen an ash bucket like that since being on my grandpa's farm.

Looking good, can't wait to see the finished product!

I'd dang near forgotten about it setting behind a shed in the weeds.
