Fresh Squeezed

When was the last time you had fresh squeezed orange juice? While many of you might have the chonicle glass dish type juicer I am using my 1930's Wearever Juicer this morning.

Not every morning do we get fresh squeezed juice, however, this morning is different. I am wanting highlight a serious problem affecting the citrus crop of Florida; Citrus Greening.

Citrus greening, or Huanglongbing disease, HLB, is the most distructive disease for orange and grapefruit trees in the U.S. It is devastating 80% of Florida's crop harming the growers with lesser yields and for the harvesters who are paid by the baskets they pick with so many more smaller fruit.

Prevention and treatment methods have proven elusive, and a definitive cure does not yet exist. Since HLB was detected in Florida in 2005, Florida's citrus production has fallen by 80%. the lowest since World War II.

Even thought the fruit is smaller and doesn't ripe they still produce a great flavorful drink. Don't be fearful the odd fruit help support the growers and harvesters of Florida.

That "Wearever" juicer from the 1930's and 40's was the "Cadillac" of the era when you didn't just open the fridge and have a jug setting there ready for consumption. People bought bags or boxes of oranges and juiced them in the mornings. . 94 F sunny windy a t-storm on the way

That's some interesting information about HLB disease. This is the first I have heard of it. Most of out citrus produce out west here comes from CA, AZ, MX.

I seen these oranges in the store the other day and thought it a good blog topic.

My mother had the exact same Wearever juicer, but it was rarely used because we could never afford oranges or lemons. She also had the conical glass juicer which did see the odd fresh squeeze of a citrus fruit, mostly grapefruit.

It was cold and rainy here all day, high temp of 50F. Storm total so far 2.25". The threat of flooding in Calgary and surrounding areas has been averted because the storm is weakening and beginning to move East.

I use my glass one mostly for lemon juice so I can pick out the seeds easier.

We've cooled down to 83 and have windows open yet. The storm is a ways off

I haven't had it in years. I did however make fresh squeezed lemonade for kid

We seldom had juice. When we had oranges, usually around the winter holidays, we ate them. It was the same with my kids, and only occasionally bought juice because they would scarf it down a gallon at a time.
I don't drink orange juice because of the sugar content of it, but Joe had a glass every morning, until I read about the benefits of apple juice, so he now has unfiltered apple juice instead.

Not in a long, long time. I have to stay away from citrus fruit and drinks, due to reflux.

REAL Lemonaid is something grandmothers make a pitcher of on a hot, sultry, summer's day for out on the porch

Apple juice is fantastic both to just drink or cook with. Making a pork roast with sweet apple juice gives the meat a flavor no one can say no to for a pulled pork sandwich.

What a shame! I posted this blog to enable the consumers.... removing the fear of an odd product.

Lemonaid is the essence of being a Grandmother. A few lemons, sugar, ice, and water creates the memories for generations.

I never heard of HLB and thank you for the information. Every morning I squeeze tangerines plus one or two lemons and drink a glass of this vitamin C boost before breakfast. I don't buy juices/lemonades that are on the shelves in supermarkets. I also make my green smoothies during the day.......

That's an excellent healthy plan. Here in Iowa we have to depend on citrus brought in; we've even had oranges from as far away as South Africa. When I heard of HLB I kept an eye out for some in our stores to do the blog pointing out the disease and it's affects on agriculture.

I don't care much for orange juice, but I do make a lemon cranberry mix and sweeten it with a couple drops of liquid Stevia.

HLB also attacks grapefruit, hopefully it doesn't get the lemon trees as well.

Florida and the Feds are working on a cure. An insect carrier has been identified. Now it is up to science to get to the bottom of this dire situation.
