Off to WAR!

A long time ago.......

In a state Far far away....

The Legislature declared the Sunflower a Noxious weed to be irradiated from Iowa's ditches and public lands.

The Sunflower just happens to be the the State flower of Kansas. Kansas retaliated by declaring OPEN SEASON on the Goldfinch ... Iowa's State Bird.

The Governor called out the State Militia to defend the Goldfinch.

After much deliberation and diplomacy the matter was settled.

That was the LONG Way around to the topic of my blog..... The Iowa State Flower... The Prairie Rose We have some in the rougher east end of our lawn.

Here you see the rose with some Buttercups.

The history lesson is true.... Happened in the 1980's under Governor Branstad.... Iowa's Greatest Governor later made Ambassador to China. Iowans are so Proud of this dedicated Governor... He brought Iowa's economy out of the old Ag base into a powerhouse of industry. Iowa now has to import corn & soybeans to meet the needs of our thriving economy for exports

Interesting post and pictures. Beautiful Sun flowers and cute little Goldfinch, to brighten up our day. I love the bright cheerful yellow of the pretty little Buttercup too.

We have wildflowers, potted plants and seedbeds all around the yard along with flowering fruit trees making the lawn one big garden.

My take from this is that your state politicians have nothing better to do than declare war on flowers and birds. I shake my head in disbelief. LOL!

Great history lesson! Sunflowers would take over my property if I let them. They must have escaped from Kansas.

Beautiful pictures of the wild sunflowers and gold finch. We have wild sunflowers, and the prairie wild rose is our Provincial flower. There are a few gold finches around, but I rarely spot one in my area.

It is raining here today with heavy rainfall warnings to the north and west of where I live. Some areas have flood watches in place. I live on high and dry ground, so no worries for me. We really need the rain for the non-irrigated crops to start growing. Soon we will be on the downhill slide into winter.

The Sunflower is a pretty pest that was put on a list of weeds to be sprayed with herbicide to clean up the state's highways. Kansas took notice and got STUPID.

It might be a conspiracy hatched in Kansas to take over the yards, gardens, and fields of the USA.

I am on the lookout for our illusive Indigo Bunting. Our back yard gets filled with dozens of the flickering yellow birds their waving flight pattern sets them apart from other birds.

We got a few sprinkles early this morning... the thunder made more noise than justified by the precipitation. The crops have plenty of moisture ... even my tomato plant and string beans look just fine.

The sunflower/goldfinch conflict - interesting. Wiser heads obviously prevailed and the matter settled as stated. Now to extend same to the current firearms conflict. i.e. wiser heads prevailing.

I really like your upbeat pictures, and your state flower, the prairie rose is a beauty. Does she too have a fragrance?

The Prairie Rose has a lighter fragrance... delicate, yet complex almost spicy. The plant gets a bright red hip that's provided vitamin C for the early pioneers to the Midwest.

It sounds beautiful. I also like that its fruit provides health benefits (Vitamin C). I use rosehip seed oil daily to hydrate my skin.

I've harvested a few for a tea, however, being rather bitter I can find better ways to get my Vitamin C.... LOL!
