Sandwich had many bad habits and vices. Lord Sandwich was an avid gambler, the story goes, and he did not take the time to have a meal during his long hours playing at the card table. Consequently, he would ask his servants to bring him slices of meat between two slices of bread, which could be held in one hand. A habit well known among his gambling friends. According to this account, they began to order "the same as Sandwich!", and thus the "sandwich" was born. With the multitude of bread types and rolls The vast array of meat choices. Cheeses galore... I haven't eaten bread for almost 30 years......the sandwich was never part of my life.....I grew up with heavy whole grain bread which carried the toppings ...Smørrebrød....not between 2 slices.....When we came to Canada in the 50s, my parents were horrified by the bleached white cottony substance used as bread.....my father called it PFD bread......like the substance used for Personal Flotation Devices.....My mother had to really look hard to find the flour and meal to make good bread.....she had never had to make bread in the old country...I learned along with her and continued making my own bread until I was diagnosed with Celiac disease.......It was a tough transition.....there was gluten in everything ........

Interesting read of how the sandwich came to be. My favourite sambo is salad, with all the trimmings, no meat thank you.

I am thinking my grandma made some of that bread for the holidays. Can you still have Lefsa? I have never run across that disease or the ensuing maladies. Best wishes in getting through it.

No, Lefse has flour in it.....I sometimes make 100% Masa Harina tortillas, but that's a lot of fuss for just one....
