Little Reminder

I looked outside and my rhubarb looks to be about enough for a strawberry rhubarb pie

My reminder is; IF at any point your rhubarb got "frosted" cut it off and throw it. Rhubarb that has been hit by frost develops a toxin--- don't know what it is... but DO NOT EAT IT... just wait and get more later.

I LOVE Strawberry Rhubarb pie

I don't recall who or where I heard or read about the toxin... just don't take the chance. I have strawberry pie filling to mix with my rhubarb... maybe tomorrow or Sunday.

I tried rhubarb pie once, it tasted kind of strange to me. Now a Dutch apple pie, or a cherry pie? Yummy!!

I remember Mom making rhubarb pie. My Dad loved them, she didn't but would eat a small piece. I liked it but my brother didn't care for it.

I can't remember if she made strawberry rhubarb pie but Dad planted both so probably she did.

Heck, that was a looong time ago

That is where sweetened condensed milk and strawberry pie filling come in to gloss over some of the more tart aspects.

My grandmother made them ... even those "fried pies" like you see in the store in a heavy old cast iron pan... but she always shooed us out of the kitchen when she was doing "deep fat" frying.

That pie looks really yummy. I love rhubarb tart, never had it with strawberry though.

I have to admit the pie picture is from the net, however, I do lattice topped pies, as well as, decorative motifs on special occasions.

Check around and see if a friend or neighbor has some. It is prodigious enough purchasing it is only a last resort. We get mountains of it from a few plants and share with many others.

Healthy rhubarb plant you've got there and thanks for the frostbite reminder. To date, frost hasn't affected my rhubarb but it's good to know in the event it does :- ). Strawberry rhubarb pie sounds delicious. I'm a little lazy and enjoy stewed rhubarb served with custard or icecream.

A recipe that is an easy addition would be a rhubarb cobbler. You don't have to roll out your dough yet you get the tartness of the fruit. My grandpa made rhubarb wine... He called it "Piestingle."

I like home made rhubarb pie, but not with strawberries like my gramma used to make.

Try the plain rhubarb cobber way easier to make

Yes, it is. I usually buy a large bunch of rhubarb, enough for one pie, from the Amish each spring, but I haven't done that for the past few years.
Now you have got my mouth watering for it..... but will my body co-operate and get it done? I guess time will tell, eh?

We have what is called "strawberry rhubarb" I will look and see if there are any "Babies" coming off that can be dug. You take a look for a sunny spot that gets plenty of rain and I will send you a start. Our rhubarb get the runoff from the roof of an outbuilding on the south side.
