breaking News! Universal Health Care Law Upheld By Suprem Court

Affordable Care Mandate upheld under tax clause, not commerce clause by a 5-4 decision. The U.S. now joins the rest of major economies in offering their citizens universal health care. There seems to be a clause that allows states to opt out and not take federal funds for health services, then they don't have to comply. I know things will get very, very ugly on the left now. What say ye?

It will be interesting to see how Arizona handles this. In the past they refused to take federal Medicaid money because of the strings attached.

Actually there have been several things passed into action in the last week by the Supreme Court, some as a 5 to 4 . I do believe someone on that squad is an independent thinker!

I am very pleased with the Supreme Court's decision and look forward to seeing all the changes put into place. The decision came as a total surprise to some, especially since Justice Roberts cast the first vote for upholding the act.

Hey Moot, that was a very nice comment. Now if only the naysayers would figure out that President Obama was elected on the platform of Affordable Healthcare. Doesn't make a lot of sense to continue to challenge the Act when Romney is campaigning on a "repeal and replace" platform.

My error. I meant things will get very ugly on the right.

Spirit, In grandstanding, I'm sure many GOP governors will refuse grants, thus denying their citizens many health care services (In FL Medicaid, as a Social Worker, I used to stay on the phone for hours trying to get someone to talk to me on behalf of a client. After holding for hours, the phone would go dead). I'm wondering if this means people will be crossing state borders like they do to buy cheap dentures, etc. Some insurance companies allow people to go to foreign countries for surgery because it is cheaper for the insurance company. I would not mind having my surgery in a foreign country I wanted to visit.

I'm so pleased for all my American friends. Not because I have any axe to grind; I don't. I just don't think it is in the interest of any country to have any of it's citizens without easy access to health care. I sincerely hope you will all start to pull together now, and realise that, as individuals, you make an interesting people...but as one, you make for a great nation.
Moot, The Republicans will try to cut funds for enforcement to try and destroy it. You should know by now, based on some of the attacks right here on this site that pulling together is unlikely. In hard times, everyone seems to be for themselves making a nation weaker rather than pulling together, making a nation stronger. Hate simply clouds the brain of rational thought.

Ane, If the GOP is successful in destroying the Affordable Health Care Act in the future, it will be a scar on this country's history, not that scars on American history are any drawback to certain groups. As a matter of fact many groups are proud of America's tainted hx.

Hi Sunshine: Thank gawd for President Obama and all his great work. And big kudos to Justice Roberts for his vote.

I don't understand why you call it 'universal' health care though. It's nothing like we have in Canada and most industrialized nations which is health care for all paid for out of our taxes.

akamatt, the full law does not kick in until 2014, so I suspect they will continue to use the ER's as a doctor's office until then. SFF does not allow transfers of links, but there are sites that explain the law. I will try to capsulate the parts and post this week.

Actually everyone seemed shocked that Roberts, an ultra conservative voted to uphold the law.

bijou, it seems Roberts shocked everyone, definitely me. Most of the people who are against the Act are those who will profit most from it. So one might wonder why one would vote against their own interests. Well to make a long story short, perhaps they desire to identify with the 1%, who despises them anyway, but they can pretend they are better than others in the 99% by identifying with the 1%.

Rocket, congatulations to those uninsured people. I have always had insurance coverage, but I wish the same for everyone less fortunate than me. But for my stubborn determination, and the grace of a higher power, there go I.

E.T., it is a miracle of sorts, because the congress votes the way it's financiers vote, and the court is definitely partisan. The NRA was taking notes on who voted today against Holder, promising retaliation if they did not vote the way the NRA wanted. That's a scary thing. They don't even try to hide they control the congress.

Rosebud, thank you. believing anything someone says is dangerous these days. I think if we can spend trillions on wars and killing all over the world, we can spend a fraction of that on human beings and life.

Arizona and 25 other states have filed suit against the Obama regime and will not be implementing Obamacare. We have sufficient funds in Arizona to fund our own Medicaid system without Fed involvement. I assume the other 25 states may be in the same situation.

I am sure people will go to other states for care. Most of my working career saw hoards of people coming to NY and CA becasue benefits were best there. In the early days they were the only states that allowed abortion.

As for going to other countries for care - I myself make an annual or semi annual trip to Mexico for my meds. Last winter I paid for the meds., airfare and a 2 week vacation in Puerto /Vallarta for what I would have paid for the meds alone here, even with medicare advantage.

Unfortunately the most needy are unlikely to find a way to do this.

h532, I hope the masses wake up in time to fight not to turn back the clock. It's debatable, and the right is raising far more money to turn back the clock. I mean the National Rifle Association is openly warning elected officials of how they had better vote...and the scared officials, including Democrats are voting as they are told. Our democracy is a sham, so anything can happen.

Well Bob, perhaps it's OK to borrow from China since we have sent so many of our jobs over there in outsourcing. Even our Olympic Team uniforms are made in China. According to the news (we can't always take what they say to be factual) if the uniforms were made in the U.S. it would have brought $1 Billion to the U.S. The response from the Olympic officials is that the Olympics are funded by private donations.
