Welcome to Week 50 – X Week: Pearls' Coastal Capers!

Featuring: Xeriscaping, X-shape

XERISCAPING
My new word for the week … XERISCAPING. Had never heard of it until I started searching for X-week words. From what I understand it refers to a type of gardening that doesn't require irrigation. Because of the mulching and lack of nearby water supply, these flowers I found in a public garden on Cape last summer seem to be a good example of xeriscaping. When I first saw them I thought they were Lupine but after comparing them to photos online I actually think they are Veronica Spike Speedwell.

X-SHAPE in fence
Words beginning with the letter X are really hard to find so I'm substituting a photo that has the shape of an X in it. This December 2021 photo of a storm-battered fence at Forest Beach in South Chatham shows pickets collapsing onto each other, making the shape of an X in the center of the photo.

X-SHAPE in lifeguard station
And here's another photo that has the shape of an X in it … the base of the lifeguard station at Earle Road Beach in West Harwich.

Thanks for joining me for Pearls' Coastal Capers - “X week”!

I had to use google to find some x-words too. XERISCAPING is a great one.

Part of why I've had so much fun with Foto Friday .. I've learned a lot of new words!

I enjoyed your pictures. It must be difficult to find things to illustrate the letter X. Well done!

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

Thanks! Going through my photo archive to find x-shapes wasn't too difficult but finding words like "xeriscaping" was in fact a challenge! Foto Friday, while challenging at times, has been a really fun distraction for me.

Xeriscaping is becoming more popular year by year as folks become more & more concerned about conserving water. We have some awesome examples here in this semi-arid area.

I don't think I would want to sit on the lifeguard's stand, but I could sure sit and look at that scenery for a long time..... X shapes or not. I prefer a deserted beach to one that is crowded.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

I think it's good that people are becoming aware of water usage. I just love beautiful landscaping but when I drive by lawn sprinklers going full blast I shake my head!

I agree with you about the height of that lifeguard stand! And I'm not a fan of crowded beaches either. The countdown is on here .. in just a little over a month beaches will be packed again (and I'll be looking forward to September!).

Thanks Maudie! I'm a fan of flowers too and they're finally blooming again this season on Cape! Early season flowers here are mostly Forsythia, Daffodils, Tulips, and Azalea. The colors are just beautiful!

Thanks! I've been hoping to photograph some more beautiful sunrises over Nantucket Sound but lately the colors haven't seemed as vivid. I wonder if the season makes a difference.

In photography, the time of the day and the weather makes a big difference.

Absolutely! I carefully monitor both. Just thinking the time of year may have some effect as well but I haven't been photographing sunrises long enough yet to identify a trend.
