Welcome to Week 45 – S Week: Pearls' Coastal Capers!

Featuring: Sculpture, Sea Bird, Shadow, Soar

SCULPTURE
Taken at the gardens of the Museum of Art in Dennis, mid-May last year. What an interesting SCULPTURE! When I first looked at it I didn't even see the face, just the outline of the two people. Then I saw what looked like a mermaid's tail in the center which on closer observation turned out to be a nose! Then of course I saw the mouth and the whole image came together for me. Looking forward to the end of May when this year's Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition opens.

SEA BIRD (… and many more “S”-words in the first sentence!)
Sunrise at Saint's Landing in Brewster last September, a SEA BIRD using its sixth sense to land safely on the water. According to the National Audubon Society, birds sense magnetic fields and they use this information like an inclinometer to help safely orient their landing direction. Fascinating!

SHADOW
A photo of my own SHADOW against the dunes of South Village Beach last May. Doesn't it look like I'm wearing an acorn cap and carrying a walking stick? Not sure why the shadow looks that way. I guess it will forever remain a mystery!

SOAR
A bird SOARS over the shoreline at Millway Beach in Barnstable. This past Tuesday morning was my first photo shoot in Barnstable. I went there in anticipation of photographing the Sandy Neck Lighthouse which you can see on the distant shore beyond the cove, directly under the bird ... it's that tiny little dot. I think my next trip there will be after I purchase a telephoto lens!

Thanks for joining me for Pearls' Coastal Capers - “S week”!

Beautiful assortment of S's. That statue is multifaceted with so many different interpretations.

I enjoyed all four pictures, especially the one of Millway Beach, that is a place I'd love to visit. I've always had a thing about beaches and views of the sea.

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

It was definitely an attention-getter! It drew a crowd and I remember having to wait for the area to clear out so I could get close enough to snap the photo without elbowing my way in!

Thanks! Millway was nice ... I just wish the lighthouse was easier to see from the shore. Definitely need a telephoto lens or maybe a boat ride to get close enough to photograph the lighthouse.

Great photos as usual, Pearls. That's a very unusual sculpter, and what a nose lol. Very interesting shawdo photo, I thought it was a cap and stick.

Lovely selection of "S" photos.

I agree, Maudie. The sculpture sure is unusual! If I remember correctly all of last year's sculptures in the garden were pretty unique. It will be fun to see what they have on display this year.

Sculpture is mankind's highest achievement; Whether in Greece, Rome, Cairo, New York, or Chicago it is the sculpture placed around the city that catches my attention... defining the culture that placed it on display.

Peaceful..... I enjoy peaceful.
That strange statue made me think of Allerton Park about 25 miles from us.
It has various interesting sculptures all over the vast acreage. If you haven't heard of it, look it up. It has a huge Sun Singer statue in the middle of a circular drive, but it has various other ones scattered along trails throughout the timbers.
It also has columns of Chinese Fu Dogs, and other Chinese statues.

That was fun ... I just took a "drive" there! The canopy of trees over Old Timber Rd is very pretty. And there were a bunch of 360 photos for Allerton Mansion (loved the sphinx and reflecting pond!), Fu Dog Garden and Sunken Garden. What a pretty area!

I remember it as a kid and a teen.... walking those trails were fun, and one never knew what kind of wildflower or animal would be seen, as well as statues. I've never actually been inside the mansion, but I've seen pictures, and the history of the whole place is rather romantic.
I've taken Joe there and he was also impressed, and the last time we went, we took his son also. That day, Joe sat in the visitor center and chatted with the attendant who had worked there for decades, while his son and I walked the garden areas. The rolling lawns often have couples sitting on blankets or children playing around their parents. Many weddings are performed on those grounds during the good weather.
I think Joe and I need to get out this spring and take a drive up through there and I could take some current photos.

That sounds like a terrific outing for you and Joe once the weather warms up! I bet the gardens are beautiful when the flowers are in bloom. Still pretty chilly and gray here. Spring comes late to Cape Cod.
