I first became interested in photographing the sights around mid-Cape Cod back in May when Foto Friday started a round of alphabetical postings. I had always enjoyed looking at photographs but hadn't really ever put effort into taking my own. Initially, I'd just show up at the location I wanted to photograph and take a bunch of random photos hoping for the best. Then as I gained some experience I found that a little advance planning can help. The time of day, the tides, the weather, and the season can really make a difference. The height and angle of the camera matters too.

These two photos are a perfect example. They were both taken in the same location (Earle Road Beach, West Harwich, MA) but the top photo was taken on an overcast afternoon in May with the beach open (no fence), while the second photo was taken just after sunrise in December when the beach was fenced off.

It's amazing to me how the amber post-foliage plants included in the foreground, the added visual interest of the fence and the cloud formations, the slightly lower camera angle, and the golden tones of sunrise can make the photos look like two totally different locations!

I'm having a lot of fun with this new found hobby and I have our group of Foto Friday friends to thank for the inspiration and encouragement!

Photography is such an interesting hobby, isn't it!!!

We see many things with a different 'lens' when we put a bit of thought into the composition of a photo.

There's always something to learn too.

I'm really happy Foto Friday is back for those who enjoy it!!

They do look like two different locations, until I stopped and looked for the landmarks that are the same.
Then I got to thinking...... life is a lot like photography. How we view things has a lot to do with our "picture" or perspective on it. What colors our lens? Love? Hate?
Mistrust? Suspicion? Tolerance? So many things do. And from what angle do we view the things that happen is a great influence on how we see them.
Onlooker? Participant? Victim? Or other.
This has given me a lot to contemplate.
I hope you have a great week, as you search for those F subjects.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

Pearls I always use my cell phone to take photos. I do have a camera but never use it. The other day I was coming back from shopping and I was walking along Beach Avenue. The sun had just set and I looked out on English Bay where all the ships sit where they are either waiting to be unloaded or being loaded. I did take a photo of it but it seemed very distant. It is always like a little city out in the bay when they are all lit up. They have a glut of ships in the harbor now because of the washed out roads that occurred in November things have backed up and trucks weren't available when unloading the ships. I think I probably needed a camera with a timer or something to get the right effect. Anyway I enjoyed your photos.

That's a great observation about perspective and how it makes us feel about our experiences. Thanks, and I hope you have a great week too!

Sorry to hear the ships in the harbor are backed up. It's happening here too but for a different reason .. I think here it's partly due to Covid-related labor shortages. I remember experiencing exactly what you were describing when I took photos of some ships. They looked so far away! I was thinking maybe a telephoto lens would help but first I'll have to buy a camera! lol

I agree, they do look like different places and then look again and realize it is different seasons.

Great idea!

One of my hobbies is changing the landscape plus it is good exercise. I have a few before & after pictures but I am a terrible photographer. LOL
You are good at your new found hobby.
Party On!

I'm glad what was once perhaps a passing interest has now become an absorbing hobby. I think you've got a good eye for composition and with an increasing understanding of what makes a photograph 'interesting'/stand out, perhaps in time photography could become a side business for you (?). What started out as a hobby for my daughter became an unintentional side business while on maternity leave after friends and colleagues, who on admiring her intimate family portraits (photos) , requested same/similar. She is very much enjoying the interaction, and privilege, of entering people's/clients personal lives and space. Your photos do justice to your natural surroundings Pearls, the coast in particular. You're doing great

I took the first photo for letter E when we went through the alphabet the first time and I decided it was so dreary that I wouldn't post it. That made me determined to do better the second time around! A different season did the trick!

That's awesome about how your daughter is enjoying doing family portraits! It's great when a hobby develops into something more. That happened to me with dance too!
