Yesterday I purchased a few “special” Christmas cards to supplement the box I had on hand. I was looking for unique, blank cards with plenty of room to write on. I was happy to find several collections of cards by local artists … I like to shop local whenever possible. One card in particular caught my eye. It was a watercolor print by local artist, Karin Tyndall, depicting a cartoonish seagull dressed in duck boots, a brightly striped red and green scarf, and a cozy Wellfleet Shellfish Company knit cap. He holds a stick in his beak, grinning while staring squarely at the viewer. Adorable! This morning I opened the card, intending to start writing on it but suddenly was distracted by the art print. Was the seagull really carrying a stick in his beak? Or was it a joint? Oh no! Substances are not my thing so I hoped for the best as I furiously Googled my way to an answer. It turns out the item he is holding in his beak is neither a stick nor a joint. It's a French fry! I had never heard the expression “Happier than a seagull with a French fry” but now I'm in the know and all is well for card-writing this morning! I don't know if it's permissible here to post a photo of art work as long as it's attributed, but I'm going to try. This cute watercolor is by Karin Tyndall. She has a website if you're interesting in seeing more of her work. A day without dance is .... just kidding. I have no idea!

I had not heard that expression, but I certainly understand it! We were at a pizza place on a road that runs along the ocean or a bay.... I'm not exactly sure where it was, but it was in MA. I wasn't feeling very well and didn't want to eat pizza, so Joe and his son went in to eat and I sat in the car, facing the water and watching the seagulls. People were tossing bits of food up into the air and the gulls were catching them on the fly, swooping all over the place. When Joe and his son came out, I noticed he was carrying food wrapped in a napkin, and wondered why they hadn't given him a box for leftovers..... but it soon became evident that he had brought out bits of crust for the seagulls! They swarmed him, and one almost dive bombed him in the head to get to it, and snatched a whole piece out of his hand before he could even tear it up to toss! Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

Lol, yes .. seagulls can be pretty persistent when it comes to finding food! And they're smart too. I've seen them scoop closed clam shells out of the ocean and fly with them over the paved area of the parking lot to drop them on that hard surface so they'll break open. They use the pavement like a tool! Amazing!

THAT THING DOES NOT LOOK LIKE A JOINT. A FRY IS FAR FROM SURPRISING. OUR GULLS GO RIGHT INTO THE COVERED MARKET AFTER HOURS AND EAT WHATEVER THEY CAN FIND AND THAT CAN INCLUDE FRIES FROM RESTAURANTS BORDERING THE MARKET. SOME OF THOSE GULLS ARE WELL-KNOWN AND LOVED BY MANY OF US AND WHEN WE SCOLD THEM FOR THEIR BAD MANNERS, SOME ACTUALLY ANSWER BACK.

Pearls I haven't seen seagulls dropping hard things on hard surfaces but have seen crows do that. Birds are highly intelligent. I like your painting of the seagull dressed in duck shoes. I wake up in the morning sometimes and I hear the seagulls screeching away as they fly by. They also sit up on the roof of my building screeching away and the noise carries down through the fireplace. We have to keep an eye on them during the warm months so they don't build their nests up on the roof. A day without dance is .... just kidding. I have no idea!
