PuddlesLast week, I was in the ticket booth at the WV State Fair observing y0ungsters jumping around in Puddles of rainwater. It brought mind a conversation with my older s0n and step-s0n. My s0n was showing Photos of his y0ung s0n jumping in puddles near his home. My older s0n commented that there are not so many Potholes for puddles since the roads were Paved. I commented that there are Plenty of Potholes in West Virginia. My step-s0n replied, "No so much rain to fill the Potholes. I answered, "the State Fair is coming soon. There is ALWAYS a downpour of rain during Fair Week. Wait for it!!!

Indeed there was lots of rain courtesy of hurricanes Fred, Geoffrey, and Hector.

In 20, I ran for City Counsel. During that time, I started Hospice Care for my husband. We took him home, placed a hospital bed in the living room, and I called his . Five biological , 2 Step- and an unofficially adopted and her became his grandchildren. After he crossed over, there were many issues to deal with. I finally realized that I was running for City Counsel. A friend advised me to campaign a little and I might be surprised with the results. I didn't win but I did get 70 votes. That's not bad for a small town.

Philadelphia
It was my mecca for a few years. Quaker Haven, William Penn territory. I had the opportunity to go there in 2019. It got cancelled in 2020 and 2021. We will see what happens in 2022. I would like to spend more time exploring the city.

Throw Back Thursday - Public Shaming and Boycotts

A few years back, there was a suggested boycott on Paula Deen products because she had said the n-word thirty years before. If the woman is from the Deep South, it would not be surprising that she said that word at some point in her life. Most folks know better now. We all have shortcomings, say stupid things at some point of our lives and make mistakes. Does this mean a person's life should be ruined. I remember Wal-Mart discounting Paula Deen candles. I purchased several of them and gave them to my friends.

I remember reading a book called "A Million Dollar Cup of Water." The man video taped himself during drive through at Chick Fil-El berating a fast food worker because of Chick Fil-El's stance on Gay Rights and Marriages. This resulted in him losing his job his CFO position and six figure salary. He was unable to find another job when prospective employers googled him.

I remember reading the book and looking at the negative reviews by individuals who never even read the book. I personally support Gay Rights but I also support Working Folks being treated with dignity and respect.

It is ironical how one bone-headed however well intentioned action on media can cause public shaming and ruin. Fortunately both Paula Deen and Adam Mark Smith were both able to eventually bounce back from the public shaming's.

I generally will not boycott a company because of a political/religious stance but there is no Chick Fil-el in my local community. A few years back, I went to an international convention in Atlanta. I was looking for food and all I could find was Chick Fil-el sandwiches. I bought one and it was fine. I may have been contributing to owners who are opposed to gay rights because of constitutionally guaranteed religious beliefs that I don't share. I am also helping to contribute to the livelihood and well being of working class folks so it's all good.

Biden and Health Care

Biden walked into a doctor's office and the receptionist asked him what he had. He said: 'Shingles.' So she wrote down his name, address, medical insurance number and told him to have a seat.
Fifteen minutes later a nurse's aide came out and asked him what he had.
He said, 'Shingles' So she wrote down his height, weight, a complete medical history and told him to wait in the examining room.
A half hour later a nurse came in and asked me what he had. He said, 'Shingles...'
So the nurse gave him a blood test, a blood pressure test, an electrocardiogram, and told him to take off all his clothes and wait for the doctor.
An hour later the doctor came in and found him sitting patiently in the nude and asked him what he had.
He said, 'Shingles.' The doctor asked, 'Where?'
He said, 'Outside on the truck. Where do you want me to
unload 'em??'

Hypocrisy, Trees & Electric Cars

“I hope you have not been leading a double life, pretending to be wicked and being good all the time. That would be hypocrisy.”
― Oscar Wilde, The Importance of Being Earnest

A hypocrite is the kind of politician who would cut down a redwood tree, then mount the stump and make a speech for conservation. Adlai Stevenson I As citizens of this democracy, you are the rulers and the ruled, the law-givers and the law-abiding, the beginning and the end. Adlai Stevenson II

Thoughts about Adlai Stevenson's quote on redwood trees. The first thing I noticed about West Virginia is lots and lots of trees. If there were that many trees in California - it would be on fire all the time.

My California Firefighting Cousin reminds me that thinning the forest can be a good thing. It is fire prevention that enhances safety for people and wildlife. Shorter trees gives the deer more to eat so they don't encroach people areas as much.

I was not too happy when a tree fell on my car a few months ago. Fortunately the damage was minimal. Nevertheless, I am glad for the trees cut down to prevent them from falling on my home.

I have a friend who is an avid environmentalist. I accompanied her on protests and lobbying adventures on the pipeline. Later I discovered that my 0lder s0n works for the pipelines. He monitor the lines and stops them if they are getting ready to break. Thus he actually protects the environment.

I came to the realization that I can't lobby on this anymore. It's a conflict of interest. I am glad my s0n has a livelihood There are a number of coalminers who need to put food on the table. We all need fuel to keep our vehicles running.

I did attend an electric car show a few months ago. I noticed that the IBEW apprentices are learning to work on those cars. If IBEW is doing this in West Virginia, it might be what is on the horizon in the future.

We all have an ideal of the kind of person that we want to be. I frequently fall short of that ideal but keep on trying to progress but I don't pretend otherwise. That would be hypocrisy.

Challenging Times at the WV State Fair

I have been selling tickets for the WV State Fair since 2OI6 - Most years, I will take a day off, attend a concert, check out the livestock and talk to all the visiting politicians. I actually connected with the local GOP at the WV State Fair.

This year was different courtesy of the Covid-19 Outbreak. There were plans to go on with the Fair last year, but a nearby church had an outbreak of 40 cases with at least on death so the fair was cancelled. Ironically, my Quaker Group teamed up with the Charleston Meeting on zOOm and will continue to do so until September.

It's been kind of nice. I can commune with my Spiritual Community while still in my Jammies.

The Fair did open this year with some changes. The ticket sellers usually rotate to different booths but this year everyone worked with the same crew at the same place. If there is a virus - it's easier to trace it down.

I worked at the Fair Street booth by myself. My problematic left hip has become even more problematic this year. I also ended up with cellulitis in the left calf. Fortunately, I was able to park in the employee parking lot every day this year. This meant hobbling across the road with my f0ur pronged cane every day.

One lady at the gate commented, "It is really dangerous for you to be crossing the road like that." I replied, "Don't worry, my mama taught me how to look both ways before crossing the street." A gentleman who worked in the medical area offered to drive me across the road in the Golf Cart at night. He was an older gentleman who worked as a first responder of some kind.

Friday night, I stopped at the medical station and was told that he was busying doing CPR. I was advised to have a seat and wait. Naw, someone needs him more that I do so I hobbled across the road on my own.

Saturday was the last night of the fair. My gentleman friend met me at the gate with his golf cart. "Ahhh! My handsome knight in his shining white golf cart." As he was driving me back to my car, he told me about his Saturday Night adventures. Alcohol induced fights in the parking lot and people passing out inside the fair for the same reason. He even remembered that my car's name is Mozart.

Political Idealism Versus Political Realism, Sunflowers & Dandelions

Political idealism looks at “what ought to be,” and political realism looks at “what is” (even if it isn’t pretty).

In an ideal world, everyone would get a pony while Israel and Palestine hold hands as they kiss and dance in the sunset.

I am realistic enough to know that isn't going to happen anytime too soon. It is not willful ignorance, it's just the way it is. Humankind is a combination of inherently good (idealism) and inherently flawed (realism).

My college class in Political Science pondered on the subject of "political selective morality." Our allies can be SOB's but they are "our" SOB's. If certain Arab nations want to bomb both the United States and Israel, it makes sense for the two nations to team up.

In an ideal world the ground surrounding my front porch would be covered in sunflowers . Alas, they don't seems to want to grow in this area so I've learned to love the dandelions.

Throw Back Thursday - Standing Up To The Crowd

In Junior High, there was a teacher who was black. I was not in her class but some the students would leave "Black Cow" suckers on her desk. I know they gave her a hard time and Mr. C would go into the class to straighten them out.

I was not Ms. Popularity as a so I frequently went the opposite direction as the crowd. By the time I reached High School, the Civil Rights movement was in full swing. I started asking my grandparents and great grandparents a lot of tough questions.

My Step Grandfather owned a janitorial business and frequently called his employees his n*ggers. Men with long hair were f*gs. He REALLY LOVED my Jewish Boyfriend despite the fact that my biological grandfather was Jewish. My Step Granddaddy would have been REALLY ESTASTIC if he ever met my Jamaican boyfriend.

Once I reached HIgh Sch00l, I started tutoring Special Ed students. The teacher was a black woman. I remember using the term Negro and she corrected me saying the proper term is Black. Several of the student tutors decided to do a walk-out because she was busting them for smoking in the restrooms or at least that was the excuse.

I didn't smoke and I certainly wasn't going to go along with the group with the hopes of gaining acceptance and popularity. I was the only one that walked into her classroom to help tutor the special ed students.

I was surprised how gracious she was when the students including my sister finally did come back to the class. She didn't give them all a bunch of "F's"

A young couple moved into a new neighborhood.
The next morning while they were eating breakfast, the young woman saw her neighbor hanging the washing outside.
"That laundry is not very clean; she doesn’t know how to wash correctly. Perhaps she needs better laundry soap."
Her husband looked on, remaining silent.
Every time her neighbor hung her washing out to dry, the young woman made the same comments.
A month later, the woman was surprised to see a nice clean wash on the line and said to her husband, "Look, she’s finally learned how to wash correctly. I wonder who taught her this?"
The husband replied, "I got up early this morning and cleaned our windows."
And so it is with life… What we see when watching others depends on the clarity of the window through which we loo
So don’t be too quick to judge others, especially if your perspective of life is clouded by anger, jealousy, negativity or unfulfilled desires.
"Judging a person does not define who they are. It defines who you are."

WV State Fair, Covid-19 & Well Wishes For Texas Governor

The WV State Fair is back in business taking a break last year courtesy of Covid-19.

My y0unger s0n was interviewed on the news. He is in the concession business . "His quote "I did unemployment and sat around in the house hiding from the virus" He also pointed out that they are extremely busy this year making all the m0ney they didn't make last year.

He didn't tell the whole story. They were at the State Fair in Miami, Florida when it was shut down. The whole crew had to return to West Virginia and go into quarantine for two weeks. His home was gone, his car was wrecked, and his girlfriend replaced him for an ex-boyfriend despite the money that he was sending her. He couldn't go home to Mama.

I have to remember that my KlDS have a Higher Power too.
I loved seeing divine intervention taking place for my s0n.
0ne of the FlRST lessons I learned my my XII Step Spiritual Advisor was blind faith move and they've worked for me over and over again.

He moved to a friend's farm, helped them out financially and workwise as well. He replaced the car, rescued a dog, and trained it to be a dog. He spent time on hiking trails and played disc golf.

I am so proud of the way that my BAYEE B0Y had bounced back from adversity. Tough times never last but tough people do.

Granted there are some who hate all things Republican but that is their issue. Texas Governor Greg Abbott tested positive for Covid-19 despite getting the vaccine. He was opposed to mask mandates which most likely don't work regardless. Although the Governor tested positive, he is symptom-free. Love, light & well wishes for Texas Governor Abbott.

My 0lder s0n sent me a message that he caught the FiretrUCKING virus despite wearing a mask at work and the getting the vaccine. He took days off of work and luckily recovered quickly although he lost his taste for Cherry Coke Zero for awhile. Much like my yOunger s0n, my 0lder s0n spent a lot of time on hiking trails with his s0n.

I took my s0ns hiking quite a bit when they were y0ungsters. Maybe they learned something from their 0ld Mama.
