I feel so sorry for anyone struggling with their weight. I have been thin my entire life and could eat whatever I wanted, but as you age it's not the same. Addiction to fattening foods is a real addiction in our society, and even harder to conquer than drugs or alcohol or smoking. With other addictions if you try hard enough you may eventually be able to stop altogether, but not so with food addiction because you still have to eat several times every day.

It's not like overweight people don't exercise either. Exercise is just a small part accounting for about 5-10% of how much you weigh, and what you eat determines about 90% of how much you weigh.

Not in my experience, it's not.

The only time I can recall getting a lot of food in a restaurant in the US was in Hawaii,
and that was mostly pasta.

Canada's rate is a bit lower, but not by much.

I clocked in at 240 lbs in my late 20's when I finally came to my senses.

I'm 177 now.

Only about 5% of people who lose significant amounts of weight keep it off.

It requires a major change in life style.

That's what happened to me.
Gave up beer, and got addicted to long distance running instead.

I think it has to do with where people live and what they do. Me, I stay on the thin side, but maybe that has to do with my choice of foods and working/playing outside. Some people have gone vegan and eat nothing but pastas and bread, along with their salads, and wonder why they are gaining weight. I know a few of those and they are all struggling to drop the pounds. There are also those who live pretty much on fast food, junk food and TV dinners because they don't know how to prepare, or cook their own. I can actually say there isn't one person on this whole road that I live on that is obese. Everyone of us get outside and work, gardening, farming, working with animals, etc... Sure, it might be only ten neighbors for a 4 mile stretch of road, but it says a lot.
