THE ACADEMY AWARDS ARE ON TONIGHT

Tonight is the Academy Awards. I said that to a friend. His response was that he would rather have his teeth pulled than to watch it. . I think he was pulling my leg. Some love it and some hate it. Do you watch it? Have you ever? If you used to and don't any longer, why is that? I watch them every year. I like to know what movies do well and I enjoy seeing the celebrities hang out in one large room. I do feel that in Hollywood they do congratulate themselves too much but that's another matter.

I have also always wondered why it 's called the Oscars and other times the Academy Awards. I googled that and this is what I read: "According to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the origins of the name are uncertain, but "a popular story has been that an Academy librarian and eventual executive director, Margaret Herrick, thought it resembled her Uncle Oscar and said so; and that the Academy staff began referring to it as Oscar."

Old movies that won:

picture 5: All About Eve 1950

pic 6 : On The Waterfront 1954

pic 7: From Here To Eternity 1953

pic 8: Katharine Hepburn won 4 Academy Awards for Best Actress

pic 9: Elizabeth Taylor, Best Actress winner for Butterfield 8, at the Governors Ball with Eddie Fisher

pic 10; Helen Keller, posing with the Documentary Feature award. I found it interesting to see what she looks like.

Thanks for your comment, Pat. I know you well enough, that I knew you would say something like that. I know some people feel that way.

I have to admit that I haven't heard about this controversy. I know that many women in Hollywood have said there are few good roles for older women. Hollywood produces what the audiences want. It would be nice if black and white actors just think of themselves as actors, without the need to add black or white.

No interest in it at all Elaine. I find it all rather boring really. I used to watch it years ago .I guess I just got fed up with it all.

Elaine I watch them every year as well. Enjoyed the fashion parade and there didn't seem to be any crazy outfits there tonight.
Knxldy I thought they did a great job of the Oscars as well. Chris Rock was really funny and agree he did a great job of handling the boycott. There seems to be drama every year. Lady Gaga was wonderful as well.

That seems to be the case for quite a few people. Oh well. I still enjoy it. Different strokes for different folks. Thanks Maura.

Thanks for voicing your opinion, ranger. Chris Rock said something that made sense to me. There really shouldn't even be a split between male and female actors.

The more people get labelled, the more there can be conflicts, as in your example. I never heard of African Canadians so I don't get the need for African Americans, as opposed to just Americans, as you said.

When I looked up the awards, it actually listed it as the Oscars. I know the award is called Oscar but some refer to the show as the Oscars as well.

I felt there was a bit too much on the show about the lack of black nominees controversy. That said, the best actor for a part should be given the part, whether they are black or white. The real question is whether or not black actors are given the chance to read for parts where color shouldn't be an issue. If they aren't, the black actors do have a reason to protest.

Hi Elaine: I haven't been to the movies for decades so don't know any of the actors or movies that were nominated. If the Oscars was on in the daytime I might watch just to see the womens' clothes or to hear Chris Rock or some of the other funny hosts they've had in the past.

Hi Bijou. Thanks for your comment. Yes, if you don't know any of the nominees or movies, it can be quite boring.
