THE PUNISHMENT SHOULD FIT THE CRIME Now, I've heard everything. I just read: "A US fugitive who escaped from a prison nearly four decades ago has turned himself in because he needs a doctor." My first thoughts were, he must have been an escaped murderer or something along those lines. A fair assumption, right? No, he never killed or tried to kill anyone. So what did this escapee do? He stole 2 TV sets. Well that makes sense. Had he stolen 1 TV, that is petty theft, but 2 TV sets, lock him up and throw away the key. He got 8 years in prison for that horrible crime. I'm disgusted by all the money spent to lock up a "hardened" criminal like him and others. Now that he's turned himself in, they have to make sure he finishes his sentence. I'm being sarcastic. Let the poor man live his life in peace and not on the run. There is something seriously wrong with the criminal system. What do you think? Elaine Shuel |

Is the criminal system criminal? Judgment Day will be interesting - and all paths lead there.

I read about him in today's paper. He was "on the loose" for 40 years.

There are so many illegal things that go unpunished, but as the title of the post says "The Punishment Should Fit The Crime". It certainly didn't for this man. Thanks for your comment, Roxy. Elaine Shuel

Thanks for the comment, Lulu. Is it really that high? That sounds off to me. Elaine Shuel

You and I are Canadians Lulu, so I thought you meant here. I would bet the stats are different for Canada. It makes sense that the large percentage of inmates would be poor. They would be most desperate. That's sad but true. Thanks again for your comment. Elaine Shuel

That is a great point, Pat. Who knows, that might be why he turned himself in. Thanks for your comment. Elaine Shuel

Thanks for your response, Rubi. Where is the logic in a criminal system that gives 6 years for murder and 8 years for stealing 2 TV sets? That's criminal. Elaine Shuel

In the article I read, it said he stole 2 TV sets. That would be larceny and I'm sure 2 TVs did cost over $200, so I'm sure you're correct. Any way you look at it, as you said, the sentences given out make no sense. Thanks for your valid comment, Liszt. Elaine Shuel
