WHAT ARE YOUR FONDEST CHILDHOOD MEMORIES? When I think back to my childhood, my favorite times were when my parents and sister and I went on our summer vacations. My first one I was around 12 years old (+ or - 1 year). I still remember being outside and finding out I was going to be going on my first trip. I was so excited. We packed up the trunk shortly thereafter and off we went around 4am. We always left early since there was no air conditioning in cars at that time. We had a 10 hour drive to Atlantic City, New Jersey. We were living in Montreal, Quebec. In later trips there, we stopped either on the way there or back, in Lake George, NY and NYC to see a Broadway play. I love the theatre. On our first years to Atlantic City, there weren't any casinos. There was no glitz and glamour but it was better then. There was the Steel Pier, where we saw Davy Jones and others perform. We rode bikes along the boardwalk. We shopped and we went in the Atlantic Ocean. I can't say swam since I can't swim. That first year, my uncle went with us, and held me up when there was a big wave. We went to the drive-in movie. We ate KFC (it was great then) and salt water taffy. My mom was totally different on our vacations. She didn't have to worry about tenants or cleaning the house. She was so relaxed and happy. My dad loved going there. His smile lit up the room and he never smiled more than when he was going to Atlantic City. I miss those times and when I think about being there, I think of my dad who passed away in 1999. I haven't been back there since he died. I don't think I could bear it and it wouldn't be the same. I don't recall going away many times with my parents. I do recall a couple of times going to Banff and we stayed in a cabin just outside of Banff. In those days there weren't as many people around as there is now. We took the gondola lift to the top of the mountain and some of us walked back down. That was a big thing for me as I come from a large family there were just too many of us to travel. I would go for a week in the summer and stay with my cousins and that was the highlight of the summer. As we lived in the country on a farm there wasn't a whole lot of free time to go and stay somewhere.

One of mine is the discovery in Orillia, ON, at age six, that there was place on my way home from school that would let you take books home, and for free.

I could see why those things meant so much to you. They must have been a thrill at age 9 and great to think back and remember ever since. Thanks for your comment, _JKH54. Elaine Shuel

Welcome to my blog, pink. It`s really nice to have you comment. It`s obvious how much you love and remember your grandparents. I have some great memories of my grandfather too. I never met my grandmother since she was in a coma when I was born and died shortly thereafter. Your comment reminded me of how we walked to the outdoor market and I collected bottles, to be converted to cash. Thanks for triggering such great memories for me. I miss him very much. Elaine Shuel

Good blog, Elaine. There are many fond memories of my childhood. One of them is the first time we traveled by plane, it was a small plane, by moving to the capital city because of the illness of my dad. I was almost seven years old. I was so excited looking out the window at the small houses, that seemed toy houses, the mountains, the river...But I also was feared by the movements of the plain. It's a large story...
