HOME BUSINESSES I wrote a blog about hobbies that have become a way to earn extra money. This blog is not about hobbies. This is to hopefully give ideas to members on how they can earn extra cash at home. Those of you that have home businesses, please share information about your home business. As for me, my writing is how I make my living. The problem with being an author is, there is no guarantee of how much money you'll make. I've had great years and some not-so-great years. It's a job that is wonderful, in that I have some loyal fans and some of them became friends. I also worked at home as a remote agent. It was an organization that had that were well known companies. I had phone interviews and got the jobs. I worked for 2 . The problem was the organization didn't care about their agents. One of my jobs, they deleted our team. The other job, the pay went from way above average to earning as low as $3 an hour. I resigned. Tell us about your home business experiences. Elaine Shuel |

Thanks Pat.  I was hoping to hear of jobs one can do from their home. That said, thanks for giving this suggestion for those who want to work for themselves, even if it means leaving the house.Elaine Shuel

Elaine, due to a downsize (as I believe I mentioned in another one of your blogs), I began my own business following my hand at consulting. I wanted to do something at home that would continue to stimulate the mind so I registered my company doing what I did full time in the food industry but on a somewhat smaller scale. I am a French translator and in Canada as such, it's important in that industry to know (& keep current) Canada's food & drug regulations (much like the FDA in the US). As you undoubtedly know, all of our food packaging (marketing) etc must be bilingual (English/French), so I've been able to maintain a listing of Canadian and US clients (those who import products into Canada). I also have the odd out of country (Europe & Far East) client. In addition, I have a contractor whom I can outsource to when I become busy or need to take some time off. It's an ongoing profession and keeps me busy but at the same time, allows me free time, including some travel when I wish. My work can be done anywhere with the use of a laptop and cell phone.

Writing is a worthwhile endeavor. My wife is starting a photography business out of our home. She is now engaged in taking graduation photos, baptisms and weddings. My home based business has also been photography. My interests lie less in the arena of direct commercial photography and more in the artistic arena. While the taking of photographs requires leaving the home, the actual post processing and printing is done in our home. In addition to the photography that my wife and I engage in, I am also developing an invention that should help with obesity in this country. This endeavor is solely based in our home. Also we are considering introducing a product line into my wife's former home country. That business will also be conducted out of our home. As you said, you still have to go out of your home to take the pictures but the bulk of the work is done at your house. Thanks for sharing that. Any hints about the invention to help obesity? I am developing a breath sensor to measure a chemical marker. This chemical marker is a by product of body fat consumption. Obesity is a national scourge in this country. The usual approach by people that are battling weight is to modify their diet. While that is useful and needed, it doesn't entirely deal with the problem. The physical exercise that some people engage in does not produce results because they do not engage in sufficient activity to bring their body into a state of ketosis. My analyzer will allow them to know when they are actually engaged in beneficial activity and when their bodily state is conducive to weight loss. Good luck with it.Elaine Shuel

Elaine I have often thought it would be nice to work from home. But nothing ever came out of it. I am not a writer although that has interested me but writing skills are something you are born with. I am a big reader and always wanted to write a romance novel. But it is only a pipe dream and so I just read other's romance novels.

Thank you Shue for your kind words. Yes, creativity i just cannot live without it. But don't feel yet confortable to put my stuff in a blog.
