IT IS WHAT IT IS A friend of mine pointed out that I use 2 expressions often. One, I'd like to stop using. I tend to say "to be honest..". I have no idea how I got into that habit. I am very honest by nature so when I say that, it makes it seem the opposite. The second is "it is what it is". I didn't realize I said that but I do like it. It means I accept the way things are. My mom used to say "don't put off for tomorrow" and she was right. Last night when I was in bed, I thought of a great topic to post today. Yes I know, who in their right mind thinks about posting on SFF while they are trying to sleep? The answer is I do. Anyhow, I forgot the topic and all day I've tried to remember and can't. What are your favorite expressions? Elaine Shuel |

Thanks for sharing all those expressions, Dan. I have to admit that I haven't heard of many of them. I've led a sheltered life. Elaine Shuel

That's happened on a few occasions, Pat. Thanks for the expression "it ain't my zoo" or "they ain't my monkeys". I never heard them before. Elaine Shuel

Don't sweat the small stuff; You can't teach an old dog new tricks; Thick as thieves; A right royal pain in the butt; If that one had brains she'd be dangerous; He's not the sharpest tool in the box; Look before you leap; He who hesitates is lost; Although they both sound like good advice the last two seem to contradict each other. Lots more that I can't repeat here lol

Hi Elaine: Sometimes when I reply to blogs, to indicate that what I'm about to say may be a little off the wall but I will take a risk anyway and be totally open, then I start out by saying 'to be honest..." Other than that I say "thank gawd" and 'you know' a lot.

Dan's 'It is what it is' is a very useful expression, at least it was for me. I say this to myself as a sort of anxiety release value. It works amazingly well, refocusing your attention on acceptance of the present reality and moving on to either enjoy whatever happened, or come to terms with it and begin to wipe up the spilled milk. I highly recommend this in such an approach...as a trip wire into sensible, calming action. Another phrase I tend to utter is 'Where do you see God in this?' Whether it is a blessing before me, or something that compels me to pray or to respond...it points me in a direction where I will find trust and sound decision making. For what its worth, it never lets me down. Yes, "it is what it is" is a good expression. Thanks for the other sayings you wrote. Elaine Shuel

Thanks for those sayings, _JKH54. I heard a variation of the 2nd, "I've told you a million times". Elaine Shuel

I should check it out. Thanks Shartaun03. What is the difference between the groups and the blogs?

Elaine for one thing you have to be a member. For me it is a group of people that I interact through the posts. We all seem to get along well together and it is just another way of communicating with people on this site. Some of the regulars on the blogs are part of that group. Thanks for letting me know about this, Shartaun03. Elaine Shuel

Mom had the best ones. "I don't own the Electric Company, now shut the damn door!" "If you want to keep anything in this house, you have to stick it up your a$$!" (I never used her hair brush) "That man is drunker N Cooter Brown" (I never met Cooter-- but he musta been a heavy drinker 'cause Dad was always drunk) Elaine Shuel

PS I wish you and your boyfriend would be at Nashville. We really are a lot of fun! I met my boyfriend 9 years ago and he NEVER takes a vacation. I wish I was kidding. I've said to him many times that he should but he's a workoholic. I always wanted to go to Nashville. I do like country music. Oh well. Elaine Shuel
