Walking round Manvers Lake

WIthin minutes of home we have numerous countryside, woodland and heathland areas which we can access for our daily (or in our case 2-3 times weekly) exercise.

Manvers lake is a landscaped body of water on the site of the old Manvers colliery. It is a about 3.5 km (2 and a bit miles) around and an excellent, flattish walk for all the family. As the last picture shows it is also very popular on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

The lake has a varied bird population with mute swans, three types of geese, coots, moorhens and various ducks (mostly mallards) on the water along with the usual Robins, Blue tits, Chaffinches, Sparrows, Rooks, Magpies and the ubiquitous pigeons in the woodland sections. The woodland trust and local schools have also placed some brightly painted birdboxes at various places along the paths.

A variety of trees and shrubs were planted when the lake was made about years ago and many native species are beginning to find their way into the mix. Lots of birches, beeches, willows near the water and the rather striking red cornus alba (Siberian dogwood) are most numerous.

Even in winter trees and birds still hold a fascination.

Great series of pictures!! I really enjoyed looking around Manvers Lake with you.

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

It probably takes lots of money and effort to maintain a man made lake. Thanks for the pics.

Ironically the lake was paid for from the EU Coalfields regeneration budget, then the people round here voted 60 -40 to leave the EU saying 'They never did anything for us'.

Beautiful lake and pictures. It must be a real pleasure to walk there and soak up the beauty of it all.

We have the Phoenix Park less than a five minute walk away. It's lovely to have such a great amenity on our doorstep.

HOW NICE TO HAVE THAT LAKE CLOSE TO HOME. IT IS VERY HILLY IN MY PART OF TOWN, THERE IS HEAVY WORK ON THE ROADS SO GETTING AROUND IS FAR FROM FUN JUST NOW. THERE IS A SMALL PARK UP THE HILL AND FOR THE TIME BEING I CAN STILL ACCESS THE SEAFRONT BUT FOR HOW LONG I DO NOT KNOW.

I have never seen Phoenix park (except the Rugby ground on TV) but I would guess it is pretty spectacular.

Anywhere they let nature have its head (within reason) is beautiful and great for taking pictures.

With our lockdown rules walking in parks like this one has become a national passtime. Long may it continue as the rules are eased.

I must admit I envy you having easy access to the beach. We are hoping to go down on the beach in Devon in a few weeks when the restrictions on travel are finally and completely lifted.

I leave your inane comments on my blogs just long enough for people to see what an arsehole you really are. Then I delete them. What a pity, never mind lol.

Lovely pictures of nature at its best. We have nice place, just behind our house, where we can walk the dogs, just sit in the sun and meet some people (usually dog walkers) and it breaks the loneliness of lockdown. Im so blessed to have this little bit of heaven. We have a little stream running along and a lovely wooded area, and loads of birdlife. To sit there and listen to the birds singing is enough for me to keep myself sane.

Lovely pictures of a nature that invites to walk and watch the "birds" playing on the lake. It is a privilege living in a rural area - especially in times like this.
