WHAT DOES LIVING THE AMERICAN DREAM MEAN TO YOU?

We hear that expression all the time. Matter of fact we have heard it all of our lives. It use to mean to me to be happy, be IN LOVE, have and have that nice little house. To me it meant thinking that we would stay married forever, watch our grow up and do the same thing we just thought was the
BIG OLE AMERICAN DREAM.
Now I think it was just a dream for a short period of my life.
I tried to live it but then discovered that I married the wrong man and no way was I going to stay with him the rest of my life.
Now I don't believe in the AMERICAN DREAM anymore.

So what is your idea of what the American Dream was or is?

I'm looking to the future and it's out of sight,
only in the end shall I take flight.

Like loyalliz2, i also came to North America (Canada) from Europe, it was long time ago, I was young.

The 'north American' dream for me was the opportunity to become something i could not from where i came from. Socio-culturally and economically is was not of the right 'class' so opportunities were non-existent, because these were the things that mattered at that time in that country. In North America every one had the opportunity to dream and go for their dreams given hard work and perseverance. I am grateful for having this opportunity and made something of myself.

All starts with dreams and believe one's self.

So keep the hope alive, create new dreams and visions. North America is still the ''land of the free'' and the ''land of opportunities''.

The dream of life you had is not specifically the American Dream, it's the dream of most women all over the world. The right man, nice kids, nice home. We learned the American Dream was equal opportunity regardless of race, religion, financial status, the possiblity of a good education, upward mobility, social success for each and every person who made the efforts necessary for whatever it was they hoped to achieve.

The American dream for me is owning as many guns as I want, using my house as a cash machine, and having a strong military to defend me against questionable threats.

Unfortunately, in Canada we only have the beginnings of the last one.

I don't know. I've been living a nightmare most of my life.

I think mine was pretty much the same as yours in the past. When all that went by the wayside...my new dream became to be a person I can like & respect in my own right...to work hard & reap the benefits of that,a life where I feel secure & of value to my family, friends & society in general. And to see my children & grands & now great-grands live a life much the same.

Some believe in destiny, some believe in fate. I believe that happiness is something we create

I think the beginnings of the "American Dream" are just as you described. I am not sure how Bill gates can be the least bit happy but I would love to swap positions with him and give it a try.
