Discerning the right paths

today's devotional

Read: Proverbs 22:6, 17–21

Bible in a year: Psalms 74–76; Romans 9:16–33

Initiate the in the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6

No one would have believed that sixteen-year-old Brazilian skateboarder Felipe Gustavo would become "one of the most legendary skateboarders on the planet." Gustavo's father believed that his needed to pursue his dream of skating professionally, but they didn't have the money. So his father sold his car and took his to the renowned Tampa Am roller skating competition in Florida. No one had heard of Gustavo. . . until he won. And the victory catapulted him into an incredible career.

Gustavo's father had the ability to see the heart and passion of his . “When I am a father,” Gustavo said, “I just want to be like 5 percent of what my dad was to me.”

Proverbs describes the opportunity parents have to help their discern the unique way God has created their heart, energy, and personality, and then direct and encourage them on the path that reflects who God created them to be. “Start the little in the way they should go,” said the writer, “and when they are old they will not depart from it” (22:6).

We may not possess vast resources or deep knowledge. However, with God's wisdom (vv. 17–21) and our attentive love, we can offer our and other within our sphere of influence a tremendous gift. We can help them trust God and discern the paths they can follow throughout their lives (3:5–6).

Where have you met a father attentive to the heart or the energy of his ? How has God revealed his attentive ways to you?

Heavenly Father, as I consider how good parents pay attention to their , I know that You are the most faithful parent. Thank you for watching and guiding me.
