Milk comes first

Milk comes first

Bible in one year:
1 Kings 8–9

Luke 21: 1-19
Solid food is for adults.

Hebrews 5:14

Today's writing and intuition:

Hebrews 5: –6: 2
In the 7th century, what is now called the United Kingdom had many kingdoms often at war. When a king, Oswald of Northumbria, became a believer in Jesus, he called a missionary bring the gospel his region. They sent a man named Corman, but things didn't work out. Finding the English "stubborn," "barbarous," and disinterested in his preaching, he returned home frustrated.

"I am of the opinion," a monk named Aidan told Corman, "that you were more severe on your ignorant listeners than you should have been." Instead of giving the Northumbrians "the milk of an easier doctrine," Corman had given them a teaching they could not yet understand. Aidan went to Northumbria, adapted his preaching to the understanding of the people, and thousands became believers in Jesus.

Aidan got this sensitive approach to mission from Scripture. “I gave them milk, not solid food,” Paul told the Corinthians, “because they weren't ready for it yet” (1 Corinthians 3: 2). Before a righteous life can be expected of people, Hebrews says, the basic teaching about Jesus, repentance, and baptism must be understood (Hebrews 5: 13–6: 2). While maturity should follow (5:14), let's not lose the order. Milk comes before meat. People cannot obey a teaching they do not understand.

The faith of the Northumbrian people eventually spread to the rest of the country and beyond. Like Aidan, when we share the gospel with others, we meet people where they are.

Reflect and pray
In simple terms, how would you explain the gospel? How can you avoid expecting people are not believers in Jesus think or behave like you?

Jesus, thank you for reaching out me in ways that I could understand.

Even two Christians do not behave the same way, so how we expect any nonbelievers to be like us? Often, so called Christians do more harm to the gospel of the kingdom of God than they do good, simply by their actions and words.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.
