A tree to heal

A tree to heal
Bible in one year:
2 Samuel 21–22

Luke 18:24–43
Have you eaten from the tree I ordered you not to eat?

Genesis 3:11

Today's Scriptures & Insight:

Genesis 3:1–11
For $300,000, you can buy a new McLaren 720S sports car. The vehicle comes with a V8 engine pumping 710 horsepower, considerably more than you'll need for your daily commute in the morning.

Of course, you might be tempted to use all that power. A Virginia pilot learned that his McLaren was so "fast" that he could move from a luxury showroom to the scrap pile in just twenty-four hours. A day after he bought the car, he crashed it into a tree. (Fortunately, he survived.)

Just three chapters into the history of the Bible, we learn how a different bad choice and a tree tarnished God's good creation. Adam and Eve ate from the only tree they were to leave alone (Genesis 3:11). History had only just begun, and paradise was cursed (vv. 14–19).

Another tree would play a role in undoing this curse: the cross that Jesus suffered in our name. His death bought our future with Him (Deuteronomy 21:23; Galatians 3:13).

The story comes in a full circle in the last chapter of the Bible. There we read of "the tree of life" that grows by the "river of the water of life" (Revelation 22:1–2). As John describes it, this tree will be "for the healing of nations" (v. 2). He assures us, "There shall be no curse" (v. 3). God's story comes with the happy forever we all crave.

Reflect & Pray
How do we experience today the reality of Jesus' victory over sin and death? What do you think is an appropriate response to His sacrifice for us?

Father, do not let me forget the price it took Your to undo the curse we put in place in the garden of Eden. All I can say is thank you. All I can give you is my life.

My response is humble gratitude and awe.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.
