See with new eyes

Bible in one year:
2 Samuel –18

Luke :20–37
[Don't look] at your own interests, but at each of you at the interests of . . . other.

Philippians 2:4

Today's Scriptures & Insight:

Philippians 2:1–5
A video game, which has become a cultural phenomenon, puts a hundred players on a virtual island to compete until there is one player left. Each time a player removes you from the contest, you can continue to watch through that player's point of view. As one journalist points out, "when you put on another player's shoes and inhabit his point of view, the emotional record... changes from self-preservation to . . . community solidarity . . . You start to feel inverted in the stranger who, not so long ago, made you come in."

Transformation occurs every time we open ourselves to seeing another's experience, looking beyond our own vision and finding the pain, fear or hopes of others. When we follow Jesus' example and "do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain presumption" and instead "humbly value others above ourselves," then we observe things that we would have missed differently (Philippians 2:3). Our concerns are widening. We ask different questions. Instead of worrying only about our own needs or anguish, we invest in the well-being of others. Instead of looking at "our own interests," we commit ourselves "to the interests of ... others" (v. 4). Instead of protecting what we assume we need to thrive, we look with joy at what helps others flourish.

With this transformed vision, we gain compassion for others. We discover new ways to love our family. We can even make a friend of an enemy!

Reflect & Pray
How can the Holy Ghost help you avoid being small, narrow, or selfish? How do you think God invites you to see others with new eyes?

Jesus, all too often what I see is just my fear, my pain, or my lack. Help me see my sisters and brothers. I want to see them and love them.

Sometimes, when I see others with greater problems than I have, I feel so humbled and petty for being so consumed by my own problems.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.
